ls1 swap progress
so FINALLY ive started putting the car back together. for all that dont know, the car had a 406 sbc with dart heads, cam, t56 6speed. The car had a oiling issue and i let it sit on the back burner till a month or so ago and started buying new parts. Got rid of the whole drivetrain for something newer and better, and more expensive.
so this is what i started with.
and this is what ive been working on
and with pops manning the hoist we put it in the car

Re: ls1 swap progress
belch point for the coolant crossover installed
4th gen pedals installed, glad i had these laying around
it has fuel lines plumbed now too
couple more misc shots
aldl connector where the factory one was
specs are as follows
2000 ls1 shortblock
stock bottom end, rod bolt swap, melling hp oil pump
11:1 compression
Trick Flow 215cc CNC ported heads, PRC dual springs 2.045/1.6 valves
Comp Special Grind cam 238/244 @.050 .605/.612 110lsa
Harland sharp shaft rockers
Fast 90mm Intake with PTM 90mm tb and 36lb injectors
Of course Stainless works 13/4 longtube headers through 3 inch duals with one chamber Flows
trans was built by transmission physicians with new steel shift forks, carbon fiber synchros, etc... (dont have the build sheet in front of me)
and a moser 9" rear with 4.57 gears to keep me shifting.
it has been a tedious few weeks, wrong parts, now running into getting missing bolts and pieces, then maybe, just maybe it will see the road before the year is over (with alot of work left, brakes, susp, etc.) hoping for some good numbers from this car on the motor, but the car will get a healthy nitrous setup this winter. Im really hoping i can get it tuned out and my goal is 10s without any nitrous. hoping to have the car around 3100 lbs, and to appear 99% like a stock everyday thirdgen camaro.
car got the fuel pump wire ran last night and the underdash put back together. gotta wait on some intake tubing pieces so i can build my filter/intake setup. gonna wire up the fuel pump, put a couple filters in, mount computer, wire fans and heater hoses... if i have no fuel leaks, the car should run this weekend, then i have to wait on a crossmember so i can put exhaust back on it

Great work randy! Looks like you are doing a good job of making a nice clean install.
I have a question for ya...and its about one of the less important areas of your build. The LS1 throttle cable... What did you do at the firewall to make it fit in there nice? Did you make a piece witha smaller opening and tack weld it over the old 3rd gen hole? My cable is just snapped into the 3rd gen hole, but every so often will come out and give teh pedal a funny feel. I have to go out and push it back in. Just wonderin what you did there.
Other than that, your build looks like it will turn out really really nice for ya!

what i did for that was took a big flat washer that the ls1 cable would snap into, drilled 4 rivet size holes on it. layed it up against the firewall over the big hole, drilled 4 small rivets in the firewall, riiveted it on, and painted it to match. cable snaps in there perfectly and took all of about 10 minutes to do.
figure since i asked alot of questions i have alot that i can answer now!

Re: ls1 swap progress
haha...yeah. The washer idea is a good one!! I might be starting over with a new car...and I might have to freshen up the engine bay with paint. If thats the case, Ill do the same thing except ill just tack weld the washer in. Good tip!

EDIT: In fact...got another question for ya. Was your car originally an auto? Cant remember reading if it was. Anyhow...if it was, how did you go about mounting your master cylinder and were you able to get it lined up nice and straight with those 4th gen pedals? That was a nightmare during my swap...and I still dont have it right.

the car started life as a 305 carb/auto pig... i then went to a t/5 with the thirdgen pedals/ then i did a 406/t56 combo with the thirdgen pedals. The ls1 6speed pedal setup has a bracket that basically holds the master to the firewall. I did have to elongate one of the bolt holes, but i got it lined up and the hole in the bracket keeps it in place. Clutch pedal works fine. i only found out that this hole was off when i put the 4th gen pedals in. after i modded the pedals to fit and elongated one master bolt hole... all is good

thanks man! hope i fit in around here after i get done
you guys have been alot of help. then brainstorming and creativity took over. my setup was just a touch different being as my fuel lines are on the passenger side and such, but everything else was pretty straightforward

I see you did not use an aftermarket K. What issues did this bring? Looks great..especially those heads...

Re: ls1 swap progress
alot of poeple on here havent. It does sit closer to the k member than i would like, and i wouldve ground it if i knew it was gonna be a issue. I am going to shim the trans up on the crossmember minimal (3/8 or less) and that should bring it back away from it and not cause me any real issues. other than that, i had no problems at all, everything fit like it was supposed to be there

I too received plenty of help along the way so its the old " I told two friends, then I told two friends... and so on... and so on..." haha I know you'll remember that one!! Anyways speaking of fuel lines mine actually come up over the bell housing at the rear of the engine. It was the only way I could manage to keep them clear of everything and especially away from heat. The heat issue probably isnt as big of a deal as I made it seeing as the return is at the rear of the car but as you said you get to thinking about how to fit everything in there and some things just find their own home.
I gotta tell you though I LOVE this swap.... I have caught so many guys off guard its been worth it just for the looks I get HAHAAAA. Especially those dudes in suits driving a new M5 a while back... If only I had before and after pics of their expressions. They were so stunned! I have mine nice and quiet though so that helps the deception too. Cops are brutal around here for noisy cars. I just dont want the head ache I'm too old for that crap now.
Anyways ramble ramble enjoy the car man!

Re: ls1 swap progress
well my car was carbed so mine was a touch different.... everything is on the passenger side, so if you see in the pic, i made due with what i had... modded the rail, put it on backawards, did some bending, installed a regulator and WHOLLAH!
I cant wait to take it out and suprise some people
----------
9/23
built the intake ducting today
4" aluminum tubing and a 6 inch k&n filter
shouldnt have an hard time breating
also got the shifter hole notched some more, and got hte shifter installed, this puppy is SHORT! way shorter than the lt1 t56 shifter i had
fuel pump has power and ground, and some more small things got done, im hoping to have it fired by the weekend

yes we are just going to speed density tune it, from what i hear the car runs more primarily on the map sensor, so we are going to do it that way, it needs tuned anyway right? lol

You say Stainless Works headers? Only thing I see on their site is 4th gen LS1 headers, and I was under the impression 4th gen headers don't fit around the 3rd gen chassis/body. Did I misunderstand?
