Did a search, but LT1 brings up alot you see.
I'm looking for a LT1 to swap into my 89 GTA, cause the bird spun a bearing. BTW, just about everything off the top end is for sale, though the HSR and associated parts is spoken for already.
Which years and car models should i avoid? I know that with some B-body LT1's I can run into the baby LT1, which is bad. However, I'm not exactly too sure on which years and model b-body engines to avoid. I also know that only F-bodies and vettes got the aluminum heads but I figure I can probably get a cheaper deal and later swap aluminum heads on if I want.
Do the Iron LT1 heads support enough lift for me to drop a hot-cam in there? Or do I have to upgrade the springs. I have one laying in my garage and its begging to be put to use.

Best year one to get is 95 IMHO, keyed vented opti vs splined non-vented unit in the 94 models. You'll have to swap the springs in either head with the hotcam. The 96 models were the start of OBDII and the 93 models were SD motors that you had to burn chips for to tune instead of programming the PCM directly.

Got a lead on a motor.
LT1 out of a 96 Impala SS. All accesories and ECM. But no harness(its hacked up). Fairly low mileage, about 57k.
I know it has iron heads, but that doens't bother me.
$650, sound too good to be true?

No trans. :*(.
Any way to make the 96ecm tell the 700r4 to lock up? Or do I have to get a vacuum switch?
If I can, I'll buy a 4l60e and sell my 700r4, probably the better choice.

Put a manual lock up switch on your 700R4.
Everything you need to know to do it is right here:

I'd rather swap to a 4L60E. Its not like the car has to be up in a weekend. I could spend months swapping it and not be bothered.

Good plan.
I wouldnt really avoid any of the years so much as base what i'd pay on the year and model it came from. Any of them you can use a 94-95 pcm on just the same.

Is it possible to use a 96 pcm from an impala? Or is it not worth the effort? Cause thats what I'm getting, the motor is out of a 96 Impala SS.

It will be harder to tune with the OBDII, if you look on some of the Impala boards, alot are doing OBDI conversions which alot favor because of the ease of tuning themselves, plus the cables and software are cheaper.

I have a hot-cam for it, but today when I was thinking about it I decided to just throw the motor in stock. Why give myself other headaches when I'm doing to have to deal with the wiring anyways. I can always throw a cam in it later when i get aluminum heads.
I'll have headers, and a full exhaust right off the bat becasue I have that right now in my GTA. Hooker 2055's and a SLP 2otL cat-back.
