VSS question

Can anyone tell me where to get a electronically driven speedometer that accepts a VSS for a reasonable price.
I'm currently doing the LT1/4L60E swap into my 86' Z28
and I don't feel like modifying the tail housing to accept a
cable driven speedometer. In addition to that I was wondering
if you guys could give me some insight on which method would be cheaper, easier and least time consuming?

Thanks for the help,
Its really needed and appreciated.

easiest solution would be to get a aftermarket speedo and wire the PCMs 4000PPM output to it...

a more envolved method is to swap your entire dash to a diffrent one... like a 90+ thirdgen camaro one, or a 4thgen LT1 dash.

That would have to be an aftermarket speedo that accepts a VSS
signal right? What brand would you suggest for this application and how much should I be looking to spend.

I was thinking about going with an aftermarket gauge setup, but like MrDude said, it's very pricy. I ended up getting an entire '91 T/A dash and wiring for less than the AutoMeter tach itself cost and put it in my '86 Firebird.

There is a box you can get that would go under the dash that you would wire the VSS into, then it has a cable that goes out to the current speedo you have in the dash. Bruce at Hawk's told me about it, but the box itself is like $400 bucks

So if I get the dash out of 89 & up camaro, how would I go about getting started? What would I have to do? Is the dash removal time consuming?

thanks for you guy's help

it would have to be a model year 90 and up..

i havent done the swap, but ive read its time consuming... if you think it looks better, you might as well go for the 4thgen dash swap.. lol.

your other simpler option is to keep the stock gauge, and run a cable-X box.

basicly it takes the VSS signal, and spins a cable with a electric motor at the right RPM for the speedo...

but like everything else, its not cheap.. $300 for the thing...

Thanks for the link it was very helpful, but that damn thing isn't cheap. I wondering if I could get the box and just change my speedo because I have the speedo that has 85mph on it and thats just plain pitiful. Or would I still have to change the dash?

every camaro with your dash style ( 82 - 89 ) has a mechanical speedo..

Re: VSS question

so what did you do I am in the same boat I had read an article on Camaro Performers that you could put a the gear from a 700r plus the tail housing to run your stock speedometer this was part 1 and on part 2 there adding aTCI Transmission control Unit for$774.38 to run the VSS which is nuts it seem like there got to be a better way

Re: VSS question

Some years back I saw a web write-up somewhere of how this third-gen owner fitted Autometer ProComp 5" electric speedometer and tach into the 82-89 cluster. It looked factory. He had to do a little cutting on the white plastic shell, some fab work, and the speedo and tach housings were removed from the mechanisms but it let him use a vss type trans. It can be done...
