Insulation question: Bed Liner, Dynamat, or other?

Hey guys,

I'm doing an overhaul on this '87 Camaro I picked up a few weeks ago. The interior was gross and moldy, so it's all taken out and ready for some fresh insulation, carpet, etc.

Before I do the carpet, I need to know once and for all... I've had enough with hunting different forums and different car sites for HOURS looking for an answer to this single question...

"Should I use Dynamat or a Bed Liner on the floor of my camaro"? I'm looking to keep road noise and heat down. Some say use both, but this is a budget build, and Dynamat is $50 for 12 square feet. Supposedly Bed Liner is about $70 for a bucket and 1/3 of the bucket does the floors, leaving the rest for the fender wells. Seems like the better deal, but quality is a mystery.

So, who has experience in this area? Who's done what in their cars? Any help is appreciated because, like I said, I've had it with searching the web. Thanks guys

Re: Insulation question: Bed Liner, Dynamat, or other?

My only recommendation is to stay away from that FatMat brand tar based liner. Car heats up and the tar liquefies and your floor will turn into your very own Le Brea's fun pit very quickly.
Seems to me that dynamat was designed for sound deadening. What was bed liner designed for again?

I mean, on one hand, it seals the floor and keeps rust out to some degree, and that's great, but on the other, I KNOW It's deigned "to line truck beds". My car, I was very lucky with, and it only had a few small spots by the driver's feet. I'm thinking long term but I'm also thinking with my wallet.

Re: Insulation question: Bed Liner, Dynamat, or other?

I used dynamat extreme on the entire floor. Took about 2 bulk packs but made a huge difference in noise and heat. I had a 86 iroc with just the carpet kit and had more heat and noise then now. I drove my 89 iroc around in AZ without carpet for about a year and had better results with just dynamat. Now I have the carpet kit with the mas backing and loving it even more. Would highly recommend dynamat extreme or second skin. You won't be disappointed if done right. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.

Re: Insulation question: Bed Liner, Dynamat, or other?

Ok, quick question? I have SOME surface rust on my 86' T/A on the interior. I have taken all the carpet out and will try to find a used piece I can buy in good shape. Do I need to be worried about this rust? Or can I just spray my bedliner over it? Also, has anyone use undercoating instead? I know it is cheap, but I have heard of guys doing it and getting good results.

I would strongly recommend removing the rust before you put the bedliner on top of it (if you actually care about the car long term)

Re: Insulation question: Bed Liner, Dynamat, or other?

Bed Liner is tough stuff, but you still have to treat it like paint when laying it down. All surface contaminates (rust, loose paint, etc.) need to be removed and the surface de-greased. Prep it with a scuff pad and wipe it down again. Do all of this and it will stick for sure, but if you don't, it will peel off in no time.

I had to have the bed of my truck re-sprayed because the "new guy" didn't prep it right and it peeled out within three months. Second spray, done correctly, has held up for 10 years and 200k miles.

Ok, I think I am going to go with the bedliner. This is my second build. I have actually had this car for about 13 years but have not decided to do anything with it until last year. Also, what is the best way to get rid of the rust? sanding it off?

Duplicolor makes a great bed liner kit.

For sound /rattle insulation, Dynamat or Dynamat Xtreme works great.

I use both in my build.

I used rocker guard on my floors. Car will never see rain ever again so thats enough to keep it clean. Also I didnt want dynamat as the weight alone is what I dont want. Plus I just turn the music up if its too loud LOL
