gauge compatibility

Hi guys, sooo I am currently in the middle of doing a 305 tbi to 350 carb swap and have some questions about getting my gauges to work. Now I know that the stock gauges will not work seeing how the computer is now hooked to nothing. What I'm really curious about is if I used the 90-92 aftermarket gauge cluster housing will I be able to fit 82-89 gauges in those holes. FYI the size of the Speedo and Tach on the new cluster is 5" and the four smaller ones are 2 1/16. If they are not compatible does anyone have any ideas for cheap gauges or getting the original cluster to work. I can't afford autometers (college student), but anyways Thank You.

Re: gauge compatibility

The gauges are not run off the computer,... they are run off sensors on the engine. The only thing that might be effected by not having the computer installed on your 92 is the automatic tranny 'lock-up"'. Your TBI car should have a VSS buffer already.

Here's the buffer:

Here's how it is wired.

P.S. 82-89 gauges are not 'plug and play' parts for a 91-92 cluster.

Re: gauge compatibility

Just to make sure, it is a manual trans car and I know that the 82-89 gauges are not plug and play but I know with work they could be wired into the harness. Thats why I was curious if they would fit into that cluster. But if that vehicle speed sensor would still work, I would definitely go with that

Re: gauge compatibility

The 82-89 speedo is cable driven, the 90+ electronic.
