Lets see those custom center consoles!

Lets see those custom center consoles!
No, I don't mean a 4thgen center console. That's been done. I mean something different, like a completely different console. Either custom made from scratch or something from a different car. I'm considering making something for my IROC and looking for ideas/ inspiration.
My thoughts were to make something that has cup holders, houses the radio/A/C controls and looks tasteful. I am considering making it go all the way back between the rear seats as well. Maybe I'll incorporate a different shifter (Auto), different A/C controls (4thgen?), different parking brake handle, and maybe a double-din radio location.
So, let's see what you have done!

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
Yeah c'mon... over 220 views and no replys?
I currently have 90% of my interior ripped out.
Looking for ideas:
I currently have 4th gen console, black carpet, guage pod, racing seats, and contemplating a rear seat delete.
I will post a picture but it's gonna be an easy month or two cause I work 5-6 days a week..

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
Thank you for the reply! I just don't like my console in the '86 IROC. It's cracked, I want cup holders, and I want a double din location. Just something a little more modern, that still works with a mostly-stock interior....

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
Few days late on the pics but anyway here it is
When everything is off and not in use
Open ashtray lid and iPod nano rest nicely inside
Plug ipod into dock
View of iPod operational in any of the first 4 gears.
iPod hides in from view in 5th gear so that the bright screen doesn't distract from driving.
Originally had it closer to driver but the screen was obnoxious and useless being that the pioneer deck controls it. The wiring is a nightmare to make sure everything works correctly and charges while driving. Will clean that up soon and finish the inside of the ashtray in the process. Sorry for the dark pics ipad has no flash and interior of the vert always seems dark.

Smart, simple, functional and best of all: Tasteful! I like! Still want to take it further though... Thank you for posting! A lot of people have looked at this thread and not bothered to comment. Thank you, Benc1, for taking the time!

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
In my 89 IROC - I installed a Hurst Dual Gate shifter, took the top part of the console from an 82 Camaro with the factory "Camaro" clock (no longer installed after 85) and wired it up for lights and function then added a secondary power source wired direct for my cell phone. I added a cup holder off to the side of the console - visible in pictures and out of my way to drive. Adding cup holders in the center of the console just make it tough to put your arm anyplace and shift.
I like a stock look because it confuses people on what is factory and what is not.
Once you start making all the custom stuff, like fiberglass consoles and custom seats you need to go BIG so everything matches custom.

I agree with you on the "stockish" look. My approach to car building has always been the same: Subtle. Build like the manufacturer might have. The center console I am envisioning would look somewhat like the Cadillac CTS-V.

Nice execution Doc, looks extremely clean!!
Padak, you can find a few different shifters - including a different dual gate - thru jegs and summit racing.

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
Just checked both sites, no luck.. I found one on E-bay for a 2nd gen, and a 3rd gen shift plate only, wondering if I could make that work in my 3rd gen with 4th gen console?

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
Really? I have the catalog right in front of me... There's a few, but you're not going to find them directly under a third gen category. You can literally mount anything with a few custom touches

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
I know I can almost fit anything, which is cool. I didn't even search under third gen catagories, I typed in "dual gate" into the search.
Got any part numbers? I really want the third gen dual gate from hurst that way when I pull my 700R4 to get rebuild I can just toss it in.
I am not opposed to anything that I can make fir tho, toss me some part numbers or links.

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
OK, I found a decent priced Hurst Dual Gate Shifter for a 1970-1981 firebird, can I fit this into my 1987 Trans am? Then, modify to fit my 4th gen center consol?

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
I became tired of the large gaudy 1980's yellowed switches so I cut out the old center console top and made a new plate with carbon fiber. Used new stainless steel push button switches, windows, rear hatch, door poppers. Still need to make the shifter boot.

Re: Lets see those custom center consoles!
"that looks like my radio.how did you make it control a ipod or in my case iphone?"
I probably should do a write up on it or something but my organizational skills aren't that great. It would probably end up a confusing mess.
Your pioneer head unit needs to the the deh p47dh, you will need a pioneer cd ib100II (which is no longer produced will have to buy used), a cablejive dockstubz+, and a micro USB car charger. The pioneer cd ib100II plugs into the head unit as directions state. Your iPod or iPhone would work at this point but not charge. That is where the cablejive dockstubz+ , and the micro USB car charger come into play. You need the dockstub in order to inject the extra power needed to actually charge the iPod or iPhone while in use. Older iPods didn't use as much power to charge them as they do now. The wiring is ridiculous its all plug and play but its lots of wire involved. If more explanation is needed i will do a diagram but if you gather all the parts need it will completely make since and work. There are other things on the market to do this also but even though it was a nightmare to figure out I liked this approach the most.
