1986 firebird new carpet time! w/pics
I just ordered some new carpet online at ocautocarpets.com they had a sweet 50% off deal. They also had the largest color selection and obviously had the lowest price. I went to a local custom shop and looked at carpet samples instead of waiting for samples to come in the mail. I'm glad I did too because the pictures on the internet were very inaccurate.
as you can see the carpet is completely inadequate

Yes I know I said it was the cheapest and it was, for the color I wanted. I ordered torch red which is literally the same as a neon red. They were the only ones who had this color for under 300$ (230$ for front and hatch area) that I found and I have been searching the Internet for about 10 mo. I'm sure I could've overlooked a website or 2. I'm on the way to work ill post more pics tonight

should i leave this carpet padding in there?
i really want to sound proof it a bit what other cheapish options are there and what would be the maximum thickness before the padding would show in the carpet?

When I was talking to mr mike for my seats, he recommended closed cell foam. It's similar to the stuff a beer koozie is made of.

I put Dove Gray ACC carpet in my son's daily driver '87 a year ago - already has a hole under the gas pedal and has pilled like crazy since we put it in. Don't know of any better, but was disappointed in the quality. ACC kind of dismissed it when I called them.

Re: 1986 firebird new carpet time! w/pics
I like the pads to, I came home from work and decided to prep for tomorrow when i put the carpet in. i went to walmart and got some scotch gaurd and utility knife blades and of course 20 other things i didnt need. however when i got home and read the direction it says to color test it on the carpet and if the color comes off, DO NOT USE! unfortunetly it did so if your getting colored carpet watch that...and i wonder how much it matters. i also found some yoga mats and sliced and diced them to fit nicely in the quarter panel (i guess thats what they are called) to block some of the sound.
When i was driving around all week with no carpet seats or padding i noticed most of the noise and vibration comes from the rear on my vehicle where the exhaust is and it just shakes the car. under the Gas and brake pedal area there is a thick rubber mat to absorb vibrations and heat from the motor. i guess it makes sense.
I also vacuumed scrubbed and sprayed everything down with some 409.
(how do you post pics not as a thumbnail?)

I couldnt wait to put the carpet in until tomorrow so i just put the back piece in and i was so impressed! everyone says let it sit in the sun for forever but i just dropped it in and it fit, as Ace Ventura would say "LIKE A GLOVE!" it literally took me twice as long to put the stupid spare tire back in then it did to put the carpet in. check it out.....the rest tomorrow stay tuned

For the cab area I would wait to trim the carpet until it's been in there for a week or two. It will shrink and if you cut it, it will shrink too short. Been there, done that.

The fitment problems with carpet happen when the carpet sits in the box too long and the creases set in. You took yours out of the box quick so you should be good. If you run into any spots that need a little help, heat the back with a heat gun a bit. Don't heat it from the front. You will melt the fibers.
