WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
was wondering today after my car sat in the sun for a couple hrs. . why do soo many people want to switch to all black interiors ? they get hot as H3LL in the summer . i bought one new car with an all black interior , will never have another . don't give me the crap about not showing dirt (dirt is dirt no matter if it shows) . ask why black/dark colored painted cars show dirt more than lite colored cars . my car is ultra blue metallic (dark) with gray interior (most likely most common color) . i know i clean the exterior way more often than interior . anyway whats all the love for all black interiors about ? (i still say dirt is dirt , even if it doesn't show) ............

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
Simple answer? Gray is BORING. It's everywhere. And don't tell me your interior doesn't need to be cleaned well... I used to think my interior was clean until I got a TON of crud out of my carpet when I hit it with the powerwasher...

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
Because black is a more preferred color over other factory interior colors. Most people either park in the shade, have air conditioning, tinted windows, convertibles/ T-tops, or in some cases have louvers to keep the car cooler and don't care how hot it gets.
It's not hot for very long if you have A/C and rolled down windows.

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I like the black interior because to me it feels more comfortable inside especially with my 20% tint. I enjoy driving my camaro way more with black interior than with the faded tan interior I had in there. A nice tan interior looks pretty good too as well as red but for me black interior will always be my favorite. I agree that it does get hot but that's what A/C is for I would imagine that sitting in an all black third gen with leather seats that's been sitting in the sun all day would probably feel pretty miserable I'll stick with my cloth seats

Our cars have huge side windows compared to most. And, if you have a remote hatch pop and working hatch struts (and who doesn't, right?), you hit the remote release from a distance and 60% of that hot air goes right out the open hatch. Close the hatch when you get there and open the car door. Yes, the wheel will be hot, but it HAS been in the sun...

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I swapped to black from grey because of two things: you can't go wrong with a black and red car, and the original gray interior was, ahem, well worn after 188k odd miles. Honestly I'd say that the black is about the worst interior for hiding dirt, if you want to do that spring for grey or a tan/gold interior.
And like SweetRevelation said, its timeless. It looked good when it came out of the factory, it looks good now, and it'll look good in another 20 years.
(Plus the black goes along with my subconscious Chevelle SS tribute look lol)

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
Black interiors just look good, I live in Phoenix which means extreme heat is just part of life, and I'd rather have a burning hot interior that looks good than an uglier one that's nice and cool.......but then again, my judgement might be fuzzy from a heat soaked brain!!!

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
The only reason I went to Black was because it was too hard to find red interior panels that weren't faded...
If I can find good condition red interior panels, you best believe I will be buying them. I still have my red headliner and door panels installed. The rest is black. I will be putting in new red carpet though soon enough.

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
well some of the response has really suprised me . speaking for myself i have never felt bored with gray color . i never felt the needed to be more sinister , manly , or meaner in the one car i bought with a black interior . (it was a new 1972 red Gran Torino Sport) oh well , i was just curious why black was so popular . to each his own , thanks .

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I have two favorite color interiors. Black, and NOT gray!!! LOL ....To me, grey is generic. It's used because it goes with everything, and cuts down on costs because they can offer less interior color choices. Some people love it. Personally, I won't own a car with gray. -although technically my dark charcoal leather in my trailblazer is gray, but.....it might as well be black since it's so dark!

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I concur, Black interiors suck. They're boring. The carpet and visors in my '02 are fading pretty bad considering that I always park in the shade. Would have killed to get the super rare two tone Ebony/Neutral interior instead.
That's not to say that the Gray interior in my '91 isn't faded worse though.

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
For me the reason I end up with black is that they've held up the best. I rarely find a descent grey, tan or *shutter* red interior and have never seen a blue, but black isn't too hard to come by. And really there aren't that many options for Thirdgens that don't totally date the car.

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I prefer black interiors, hands down. Gray is my second choice. I will NEVER again except a tan interior and that color is a deal breaker for me when it comes to buying a car.
I have had cars with blue, gray, tan, and black interiors. The exteriors were dark blue, light gray, and black. My mom's cars were always white. Dirt always showed super bad on my black cars, almost as bad on my dark blue ones, and not at all on my one light gray car. My mom's white cars showed dirt only slightly worse than my light gray car. BUT, for some reason when it came to interiors, the black interiors don't show dirt like it does as an exterior color. No idea why. I had to be so stupidly **** about the one tan interior I had, that it wasn't even funny. Stains and general dirt would show up extremely easy. I live in a muddy state, so this is a very serious problem with light interiors. The constant cleaning was a b*tch. Black interiors don't show stains and require only occasional cleaning instead of constant. Gray will show stains easier than black but hide general dirt very well.
Black is also a timeless color that goes very well with any exterior color you choose. It doesn't limit you. This is good for people who like to change up the look of their car fairly often.
As for heat issues... my black interior car is no worse than my tan or gray interior cars have been. Roll down the windows and drive for a few minutes to allow the hot air to leave, then roll them up and turn the AC on. No big deal. For cars without AC, you have to leave the windows down anyway, so....again no big deal. For the record, my current black interior car is leather (A/C, black ext.) while my gray interior is cloth (no A/C, dark blue ext). The only difference is that the leather burns when you sit down, while cloth doesn't. It's still frick'n hot inside the car regardless of color.

I agree that black is overdone, but it looks good. I don't think you can do a black interior to the point where it looks bad. +1 for a factory upgrade. -1 for creativity.
I'm keeping my interior grey, but i'm upgrading the fabrics and painting some panels.

Superfast, I am repainting all the plastics with plastic/vinyl paint and I was going to reupholster the seats as it was. So far the 2 test pieces I did look like brand new stock black parts. There is a thread on here about how to paint the parts properly. The again, you may want to redo the red pieces in red so they look like they are new red ones.

Re: WHY ALL BLACK INTERIORS ???
I've seen interior plastics that have been properly painted, with the proper interior paint, and they look just like stock. Actually quite impressive believe it or not!!! ....I would put forth a little elbow grease to save on trying find GOOD quality pieces, then deal with buying and shipping, THEN dealing with all the subtle differences with fit, since 80s quality wasn't exactly the best. Paint your parts, you know they fit. Take your time and you'll be happy with the outcome!

My buddy used SEM products, but I know there are others. He used to do body work, and actually sprayed it with a paint gun, but I've seen other good results with rattle car products. It's all in the prep, as with any paint job.
