The end of dash pad rattles/squeaks
Hello everyone, After driving my car after the engine swap, I noticed a real increase in dash rattles and squeaks, probably caused by the lumpy cam. So after a few annoying long trips, I decided I needed to do something about it. Here is my idea, and it seems to have worked well.
I used the thin foam underlay that is normally used for laminate flooring. It can be bought in rolls and any hardware store for fairly cheap. I had some left over from my home reno. I placed the foam between the dash pad and the dash to insulate it.
Step 1:
remove dash pad and vent ducts
Step 2:
clean bottom side of dash pad
Step 3:
place foam over dash pad and trace out the shape and cut to fit.
Step 4:
Mask off any areas that you don't want glue to get on.
Step 5:
Using a good spray glue, spray a good coat onto the underside of the dash, and the topside of the foam.
Step 6:
Place foam onto the dash pad and work the foam around the contures making sure the glue holds.
Step 7:
Once the glue has set, use a sharp blade and cut off any unwanted foam, ie: around the speaker grills and defrost vents.
Step 8: (optional)
I cut thin strips of foam to go under the dash vent ducts, not really needed, but it couldn't hurt.
Step 9:
Reassemble the dash and I placed a small drop of blue loctite onto all the hardware to prevent them from rattling loose.
Step 10:
Enjoy a quieter dash!

I did something similar to this, but not to that extent. I used that perforated stuff that goes under rugs to keep them from sliding, can't think of what it's called.
Mines a bird, so I used some between the gauge trim and the dash. Also between the dash and the steering column, that's a common squeaky spot.

Thats a good idea around the dash trim. I haven't noticed mine squeaking there at all, mine seems to be mostly around those vent ducts. As I was driving and it started to rattle, it stopped when I pushed down onto the center for the dash pad. The padding seems to have cured that. now its my vent grills in the center of the dash that are starting rattle a bit at certain RPM. plujs they are always moving around... drives me nuts!
