Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Make sure you take lots of pictures and make lots of diagrams and notes. Take your time. and there is no easy way of doing it. It also depends if you are taking the whole thing off or part way. The center console will have to be removed as well. You might want to change the heater core at the same time if it has any kind of mileage on it.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Invest in a manual. But its pretty straight forward.

Remove the center console as stated above.
Remove the dash pad. Theres a bunch of screws holding it on underneath and by the windshield.
Remove all the screws holding the dash in. Again, theres a bunch of them.
Theres a nut on each side you will see after the dash pad is removed.
Start to slowly pull on the dash. I say slowly as this will allow you to see if any other screws are holding it on.
If you lower the steering column it makes it easier as you will have more room. Only a few bolts holding it up.
Once you are able to see/get behind the drivers side of the panel, remove the spedo cable as well as any other connections (headlight switch, lighter, cluster, ect.)
Once everythings all disconnected, you should be able to pull the entire dash out.

I may have missed somethings but its a pretty simple job. Keep track of all the screws! Good luck!

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Thanks man
I was afraid it was going to be screw heavy.
I am replacing my heater core and Am trying to clean some wiring up as well! There are three harnesses behind the center of the dash. One connects to the rear defrost I know. Any ideas on the other two? Where there options that could go in my blank switch looking panels?

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Off the top of my head I can only think of the harness for the radio, heater/ac controls and lighter/defrost. Thats all I can think of for the center of the dash. Unless you have a picture, I'm not certain.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Not to hyjack this thread, but I removed my dash (well tried) but couldnt get it completely out because of all the wiring. How do you disconnect all of the wiring? What specific things should be disconnected. I figured if would also help the OP also to know the answer. Anybody have ay pics? I think it would be really helpful.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

The cluster harness you can just un-clip and pull it off the back of the cluster. The radio harness just unplugs once you pull the radio a bit forward. The rear defroster/lighter you unscrew the cover and un-clip each one. I used my manual for the headlight switch as it was it a bit tricky. I think that was about it.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

What about. The fuse panel? Aren't all of those things attached to the dash also?

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Yes some but you dont have to worry about the panel. All you have to do with the fuse panel is let it hang. It has nothing to do with the dash removal.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Good Luck....I had a buddy come and help me replace the dash in my 89 Iroc Vert.Mine was cracked down the middle from top to bottom. He took out the entire harness that runs from the firewall connector to the fuel pump connector and then rehooked it up on the new dash. After seeing what was involved I would have never been able to do it myself

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Where are you with this?

Just removed the dash with the wiring harness attached to the dash.

Why are you removing the dash? just curious.
If you want to remove the dash and leave the wiring harness in the car, then you must remove the defroster ducting from the back of the dash with it half way off to get the wiring harness out. GM put the ducting on after the harness was in the dash assembly.

I just should make a picture/tutorial thread. I have to replace my heater core on the 89 formy soon anyway

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

I've been poking around on the subject of removing the dash sufficiently to gain access to the firewall.

Here are the instructions I came up with:

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove console.

3. Remove instrument panel pad and lower hush panels.

4. Remove right and left lower instrument panel covers andtrim plates.

5. Remove instrument panel cluster and headlight switch.

6. Lower steering column.

7. Remove five (5) upper and six (6) lower instrument panel carrierto cowl screws.

8. Disconnect instrument panel electrical harness at cowl (bulkhead)connector, and under dash.

9. Remove instrument panel carrier from car.

10. instrument panel mounted components (A/C, defrosterducts, wiring harness, etc.) are now accessible for service or replacement.

11. Reverse removal procedure to reinstall. Replace any sealsor sealant damaged during disassembly.

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Wow, old thread...

Adding info:

On Birds, not just the console has to come out. The radio pod either is or SHOULD BE bolted to the floor pan.

4 wiring harnesses in/around dash area:
1. Main dash harness, runs from one side to the other between firewall connector (C100) and engine harness connector on passenger's side (C207), connects to main body harness at C208 near C100
2. Cross-car harness, contains power door accessory wires and possibly radio speaker wiring, that's the one under the upper dash to cowl screws that runs from one side to the other AND down the driver's side of the car to the console, connects to junction block under left kick panel
3. HVAC harness, comes from firewall under the HVAC heater module
4. Cruise control, on cars equipped, runs from separate harness coming in near firewall connector to cruise computer and main dash harness on passenger's side

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

The clear guage cover goes on the guage cluster before you install it in the dash, then the grey guage bezel goes on last.o

Re: Dash Dashboard removal.

Hey, I don't know if any of you know this but... You do not need to take out the dash board at all to replace the heater core... I just did one in my 92 Camaro in less that 3 hours..
