The match was great,I had trouble seeing where I had missed some spots,That's why I gave some pieces a third coat.Hows your looking?

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
It looks a shade off. If I was to put 2 pieces side by side, the original, unfaded color is definitely darker. But I don't think it will show up in a pic. I will try taking a pic in a little bit and posting it up. If I paint all the panels, I don't think anyone will be able to tell but me, but I wanted it darker. I tried matching a bunch of panels from different places in the car, and it looks like some were originally darker then others. That's why I am not sure if I am making a bid deal over nothing. Because once I paint everything, the interior will be consistent from one panel to the next. I just wanted it consistently darker. I probably could have gotten away with the charcoal grey from SEM that I used on a few pieces and painted the whole interior with that.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
You can see in this pic the shade difference. The roof trim is the original color. The sill actually looks like it has a blue tint in the pic, which is not the case. I don't know why it looks that way. But I think the color is off and I am not going to do the rest of the panels with it. I am going to call Baps tomorrow. Hopefully they will make it right.

It's a big company,I would imagine they would make it right. The sill, from the photo looks to be a charcoal grayish and the molding looks jet black,in any case it isn't right.
I hope they take care of it,this paint is very expensive.Good Luck.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Just an update. I spoke to the manager there at BAPS and he told me to send him a piece of the interior trim to match. So he should be getting it tomorrow. He said that it is hard to match older cars. I haven't talked about money yet, but we will see. They seem like a decent company. The paint is great - even though it didn't match, it feels and looks like it came molded that color. So I know, once I get the color right, the panels are going to look great.

I should be getting the paint tomorrow. I got the replacement paint for half off. The manager there was the first guy I spoke to when I called and he told me that he couldn't match something that old. So we we came to that agreement since one of the other employees told me that the code I gave him was good. I felt that was fair. Hopefully, this weekend I can paint up some panels and see how good the match is.

82tarecaro, do you have the "wrong" paint that Baps sent you still? If you do, would you sell it?

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I do have it. I only have 2 and 1/2 cans left. I am not sure how far it would get you. By the time you paid for paint and shipping, you would probably be better off getting a few cans of SEM dye in graphite. It is only 11-12 bucks a can, works great, and is a close match to the wrong color I bought. If you really want it, I will sell it to you, but it is probably cost prohibitive for you.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Well, by the time shipping is figured, NYC to WNY is way cheaper than anywhere else... I'd rather have a stock-ish color than try to color match to an interior code I don't have (dropping charcoal interior into a stock medium gray car and it needs to be worked over B A D).

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Well, to get the colored screws, you'd have to look in a junkyard or on eBay, or ask some of the guys in the Classifieds. It's either that or put up with incorrect screws from the Help section at the parts store (they don't have the grain pattern and ONLY come in black).

Mantaguy - your car is looking sharp. The car left today for paint! I finished stripping it down, getting it ready. Now I can go back to finishing up the trim. I found many of my panels were dry rotted and spent a month trying to locate replacements. But the PPG paint from Baps is great.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
We can thank Hawk for starting this thread,he's the one who tried out BAPS and shared it with us,I know he saved my interior plastics and most likely yours.I'm glad you found all your parts,on a 82 I guess that's pretty hard to do.Than's for the comment,I really appreciate it.I am really considering painting mine too,it still shines but you can see something is going on with it,it almost looks like it's turning to Mother Of Pearl,I guess it's starting to oxidize in there.Hope your paint job turns out nice,Good Luck.

I would assume it's the switch, unplug the wire from the solenoid and put a light tester in the plug, ground it then press the hatch release button and see if it momentarily lights.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I finally got ahold of a cargo plastic with cargo lid provision 'i already had a
cargo lid from a parts car'. The lid was tan and the plastic was charcoal.
Scrubbed them both up, sprayed them with adhesion promotor then the SEM
dye. Installed new carpet in the lid. I would have to remove the back part of
the exhaust and fuel tank in order to drill some holes for the cargo lid hinge.
Instead i am welding some studs from the inside. It should be ok since there is
no stress on the lid. Mockup...
