Steering colum very loose!!!
i have an 89 firebird,
the steering colum is verry lose and i can move it an a complete circle, up down, side to side. i even have to push the colum to the left to engage my highbeams. im clue less but i herd there is 3 or 4 bolts in the middle of the colum that get loose sometimes. but i dont wanna gut the steering colum and there be no bolts, or there be a simpler fix, any help would be appretiated, thank you

If it's just your steering column it would be the four bolts.Take down the panel under the steering wheel and you'll see four brass colored bolts and just tighten them up.But if it's the steering wheel that's a hole new ball game.It is easier to just put in a new column.

He can pick one up on here TGO,RED88TAGTA has one for $75,that's not bad considering if the steering wheel is messed up,I don't know about you but it's a bit meticulous for me.

I had the same problem,I put another steering column and wheel in,It looks harder than it really is.4 bolts under the dash,3 bolts on the fire wall under the dash,2 bolts under the hood.Or you can have a mechanic fix the wheel.

No! it's your steering wheel-and it would be a real pain to rebuild it yourself. If I were you and you don't know how to do this, I would definitely have it done by the pros.Even if it cost you $100 or so,it would be done the right way.

Re: Steering colum very loose!!!
I almost didn't buy my ride because of this, until I found out its pretty common. I started to repair it myself but its quite a task! There are layers of things to remove just to get to the darn screws. If you have lots of time and the patience then go for it if not take it to a shop. I think I paid like 180 out the door plus they installed my Grant steering wheel. It was well worth the headache!

That's not bad considering the column is going to cost $75 or better and 2-3 hrs.of labor.Especially if you don't know how to do it.

Re: Steering colum very loose!!!
I dropped my car off a few years ago for the same problem. 6 hrs & $100 later at a local mechanic and it was solid as a rock. Has been ever since, but I also know what causes it. Using the steering wheel as support to get in & out of the car.
Mine was solid when I bought the car, got looser & looser after buying it within 2 yrs. Got it fixed & hasn't budged since, since I also no longer use it to get in & out.

Re: Steering colum very loose!!!
mine does the same thing. i havent tried to tighten the screws but the guy who had the car before said that they had a bellcrank rigged up in it instead of using the hydralic clutch. i guess it was so hard to push he bent the seat and made the column so loose that you have to push it to the left to switch from high to low beam. i was just going to get a new column but id like to take the cheapest way out.im a little low on money lol

Re: Steering colum very loose!!!
I tightened my column and now that is perfectly snug, but I was not able to tighten the wheel it still jiggles and wiggles but the wheel is on screwed to the hub fine. I believe it may be the bearing? any suggestions?
