Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

So I was planning on making a switch panel that will hide away in the ashtray of my center console. I was going to use some short rocker/toggle switches and make them recessed so that the cover of the ash tray will still slide over them. I was just curious if anyone has done something like this before, and if someone has, please upload some pictures! Thank you in advance!

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

i have, and many have, just get creative buy some switches that are not too tall from an auto store in teh electronics section or radioshack and keep and eye on the amp setting.

get a piece or metal or plastic like plexiglass, paint whichever color you choose and drill it in on the 4 corners inside.

bam your done

Off topic slightly: I've always thought that modding an overhead console to accept toggles would be cool.

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

Woah! Great pics guys. The circular toggle switches look really good, does the ash tray cover still slide closed without hitting the switches? And the R,W&B switches look great, I wanted to make my car appear mostly stock, so I wanted to make the switches hide-away, but I have another 3rd gen that's raced out, and that is a great idea for that!

I myself am obsessed with the classic style toggle switches (I made all the light switches in my house with them) so I was going to see if I could use them by recessing the plate they're mounted on. If they don't fit I'm definitely going to use those style switches you pictured, they look like they fit very well.

I'm not sure when I'm going to get this, because like I said I just got another 3rd gen that I need to get ready for the track, so I'm not sure when I'm going to install the accent lighting on my daily driver.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

Yes, my little round ones are recessed enough where the lid closes completely and they are hidden - I just flipped the lid up for the pic. Those switches on the shelf at autozone, or can buy from www.wiringproducts.com - the wiring products place actually makes smaller ones now, might squeeze 5 in there where I could monly get 4 of the autozone switches.

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

Hmmm.... I don't think I'd need more than 3 or 4, but that's an awesome job!

I was planning on using them for Under-Hood Accents, Under Chassis Lights, Interior Accents and possibly some Auxiliary running lights.

What do you use yours for?

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

Only two I'm using at the moment, a manual on switch for my fan and accent lighting outside. I had one connected for manual torque converter lockup, but I've since moved that to function from my cruise control on/off switch, since I no longer have cruise anyway.

Re: Ash Tray Switch Panel. Has Anyone Done It?

Might consider making a new top piece and replacing the big, old and ugly 80's switches from the center console and add in switches to that area.
