another headliner question
Hey guys I was wondering if I could just go buy some headliner glue from autozone, take out my headliner, scrape it smooth then re-glue it down. How well will this work?

Once that headliner starts a falling, NO amount of salvage work is going to save it.

I don't think you'd have any luck trying to reuse the old fabric. But you can certainly scrape it, and replace the fabric with just about any fabric that tickles your fancy. I redid mine years ago with regular black kinda velour fabric from JoAnn's fabric store. I went to Pep Boys I think it was and just got the spray adhesive, spray a section, laid down the fabric, continued until it was glued well all over, trimmed the ends, and glued them around the edges, then duct taped all edges just to be sure.
Pep Boys sells the standard headliner material in several colors - it's just like the stock, and has the foam backing on it (which I don't like).
I plan on redoing mine again soon - not because it didn't hold, but because I didn't do such a good job in the corners, and this time around I'm going to 'paint' some fiberglass resin on the backside to stiffen it up a bit.
That's the big thing -- be VERY gentle with the backing board - it's very crappy material that will break in a heartbeat - you really need two people minimum to get it out of the car without breaking it (take down and out through the hatch).
Good Luck!

Re: another headliner question
I do agree %110. i just redid my headliner and i havent looked back at all. it will be a headache to take out/ repair/ and place back inside. IF IF IF the damage is just carpet and you dont mind going thought the hassle of removing and repasting the carpet i say go for it.. i went thought the abs headliner because the cardboard is +15 years old so its soon gonna die soon anyway . I have pics of mine and i went though the same confusion as well https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...-save-let.html
here's my opinion . and once the old headliner comes off u will see it will be brittle..

Re: another headliner question
After having done two, it's just hard to imagine that you'd be able to scrape the foam off the fabric without stretching it. It's hard enough to get the old rotted foam off the backing board as brittle as it is, and getting it cleaned off enough to have any success gluing new stuff on. But the foam was fused to the fabric, and I just can't see getting it cleaned off the fabric enough without stretch damage to the fabric.
But like I said, any fabric will work - what I used was on the discount table and only cost me like $2.99 a yard - glue and everything was only about $20 total ($8 x 2 cans of spray adhesive + fabric). Why risk reusing old crap when brand new can be had so cheaply?

Sounds like your headliner could be saved. Check out this link.

Re: another headliner question
The headliner isn't falling because glue is failing, the headliner is falling because the foam between the fabric and the actual headliner backer has deteriorated. No glue in the world is going to fix this.
You could peel the fabric away from the foam, and in theory you could install some new foam equivalent, but there's no way to attach this very thin outer layer of material to that new foam without ruining it. Any kind of glue would soak right through it and look like hell.
New headliner fabric is VERY cheap at fabric stores (provided your color is available), so it makes no sense to screw with the old crap. Just follow one of the many recovering "how to" threads that are posted here.
