Rear speaker enclosures

While going through the various '82-'92 Camaro and Firebirds at the local wreckers, I've seen rear speaker enclosures on some of the cars. My car ("92 RS) is heavily optioned but does not have these. What's the deal? Did they come with a paticular sound option? Seems like they're more often on Pontiacs.

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

The speakers aren't in the trunk. They are the standard locations next to the rear seats but some have a "soundbox" thing installed behind them.

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

My 89 had a pair of those in it. I tossed them because they were in such bad shape. Now I have another set from a car someone was parting. I'm going to try and glass them and make an enclosures for at least 8" woofers.

They look like this, not in the best shape, but better than I had.

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

Or do you mean the ones that came with the factory amp, they hold 2 speakers per side, I 'THINK' the sizes are: 4" round, and 4x6.

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

No, nothing fancy, just an enclosure behind the normal 6X9's. I was just wondering why some cars had them and others didn't. There doesn't seen to be a pattern.

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

Found these on eBay last June, didn't have the cash to bid (can't remember how much they went for).
The top part holds a 4x6 and the lower hole is for a 5" sub. If anyone has seen a source for these, let me know!

Re: Rear speaker enclosures

I have this setup in my 87 Trans Am. It works pretty good actually. While certainly not the equal of giant sub-woofer enclosures, they sound good and take up no extra room.
