Rear hatch help

My son recently got 1992 Firebird. The rear hatch is shut. The problem is I want to get it open and the key will not open it and the hatch button on the dash will not work either . Any ideas on how to open it . I tried to remove the inside plastic panel but cant get it totally off. I think the hatch has to be open to remove it . I need help please

Re: Rear hatch help

If your rear panel has a cutout for a light you can pop that out to get access to the assembly.Once the light is out of the hole I stick my finger in there on the left side and pull on the release cable that goes from the pulldown to the trunk lock.Just hook your finger on the cable and pull towards you.It should pop open.I do this all the time in junkyard f bodys
