how would i go about getting the bottom 5" of door panl flat..
will post photos.. anybody seen this before..

thinking..take them off apply steam and press flat..but wanted to ask first

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

Mine are like that too, but the door panel is torn from the plastic pins that are pressed into the door. Camaro door panels are the most fragile panels I've ever seen

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

i have that same problem from the windows leaking. unfortunately theres nothing you can do to it since its warped. thats like trying to flatten out a piece of cardboard thats wrinkled from sitting out in the rain. even though im very sure theres nothing you can do to fix it i would love to hear what u did if u do find a way.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

btw if u try steaming the panel i could see that helping or doing a small bit of harm so you might as well try it since its already wavy.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

o ya 1 more thing. when you take the door panel off i found it helps alot if u stick a flat head in between the plastic pins and the door to take them off without ripping the panel. just be careful to try not to scratch up the door to much,

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

The panels on my 90 bird were wavy, and the previous owner had already tossed them, but when I got the car, I took them anyway.
I cut a thin piece of paneling (yeah) that fit the door panel (on the back side) where it was wavy. 3M'ed the crap out of it with contact glue, set a piece of plywood on it with a couple of concrete blocks to keep it flat.
Dumb as all this sounds, the panels came out flat as new.
What the heck...couldn't make 'em worse!

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

If you break those little plastic tree pins off the door panel.I'm pretty sure that I've seen them in Autozone.

But yah if you take the panel off carefully use a flat head screw driver, and it'll help from breaking them.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

though what the other guy said is kinda weird i would definatley try it. its worth it since getting a new panel is 170(where i checked). and yes the pins are fairly easy to get.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

the site is ecklerscamaro.com. its a sight i used a few times and i recommend it. however you do have to assemble the panel but i think it comes with all the stuff. also im pretty sure its not a gm part or they would say it is or its a company certified by gm but a couple of the parts i got werent gm certified and they worked great.

heres a link to the three panels

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

if they're out of your red interior, which im assuming is the problem and they dont have the you wanted, since the panel comes unassembled you could carefully remove the red fabric from your old panel and put it on the new one(if you dont mind wasting the new fabric)

yep thats what i figured but mine look 5 times worse. i say maybe try it and see what happens. i dont think it would get it 100% better try it and then i was thinking throw the flat side of the cynder block on it do keep it pressed flat. or you could do what the other guy said if it works but it would b more work.

make sure MAKE SURE you know that the leaks are sealed and it wont happen again. the only thing that could cause that is leaks or maybe extreme humididty.

wow and i thought mine were in decent shape. the material on mine are all riped and there is a stain on the drivers side that looks like rust puke..... but i need to find out where they sell the window trim on the exterior. i fixed mine up a little, but the middle gets wet because water is getting inside the door.

if your talking about the weatherstripping, you can get it off ecklerscamaro.com for 60 both doors and its relatively easy to install. the longest part for me was taking the first door panel off lolz.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

hey its cool, yea i had fun with my door pannels today too, took me way longer than i thought. made me feel dumb. but its true they must be made from paper. sooo brittle. the plastic is too, on the top. i broke it. and there is retarted staples that hold the inside strip to the panel. so i got one off, the other is still attached to the broken part and i think new pannels for me is the way to go.

ya its always bad for things to go unused like that for so long. things like the ac compressor can go bad just from not being turned. (not sure if its the compressor i forget. i know its the part with the wheel that has a belt attaching it to the engine.)

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

Actually the paneling idea is not a bad one. The only think I would do is treat it with something because if it gets wet, paneling warps too. I think its a good alternative though, especially if the panels are really bad.

Re: How to get door panles flat? anybody

OK UPDATE: ***IT WORKS!!!***

picked up 2 1"x6" x8' PLANKS of ceader (cheap stuff)
also picked up some 6" C clamps. and 2 of them wood clamps 10"
forget what they are called.

total cost for tool's $25.00 thats every thing!
even the tool to remove the panles from the door's this is a must have tool if your going to do this Job.
total time in work 1hr
let sit and dry 24hrs+ it's up to you.. on that part.. but they are like brand new!!

cut the planks to size. test fit..

got all the tools set up..

stripped the door panles down (taking off all the plastic pegs)you lift and twist and they turn out.. keep them to reinstall the panle..i took them out to make the panle.
close to flat. for clamping.. you could clamp all the panle it self. if you wanted to.

now how to get the door panles wet on the side's/end's i need them wet. and how far in..Huumm..!Bath tube! so i filled the bath tube with about 6" of Hot water.

let the panel's sides i needed wet. sit in the water for about 2 min ea end.
remove most of the water from the panle with a bath towle

i layed a towle over the panle and set them up in the planks and prest most of the water out.. i them removed the planks and reset the panles up in the planks and prest them tight and flat!
Name: Z28182.jpg
Views: 42
Size: 133.0 KB
(see just above..you can see the plank of wood pressing in from the back)
now after clamping them together tight and flat!.. let them set in a warm room for 24hrs or as long as you like..i put them in the top floor of my house in a room set at 75 on the tstat.
Name: Z28183.jpg
Views: 55

then after dinner today i came back home. and took the clamps off. and this is what they look like now! (also let them sit in the room with clamps off close to a heater so they stay warm..)

Re: How to get door panles flat..UPDATE: it works!

nothing to worry about.. take a look at the photos. look at the top photos at the start..

came out like new.. and the nice thing is if you need to clean them you can do it at the same time.. then clamp them up to dry.

remember: i have 1"x6" planks on the inside and out side of the door panle.
(front and back)
(did not show a shot of the back side of the panle.) but. in one of the photos you cant just see the wood plank at the end of the door panle..

your pressing the damp panle with the wood planks and clamps..

yes.. just a fast dip lasting about 8 to 10 sec.towle off the exs water then clamp them up and let them sit.. takes just a day. to dry.. then remove clamps and let dry over night.. then re install.

the white plastic pegs just twist out. and remember to mark your lower black rubber sweep i use a flet tip marker. so i remember what side faces what..and placement.

remember: you use planks on the front and back of the door panle..
look at the photos close.. it's easy and sorta fun.
