Re: custom console start...
I was thinkin of doing mine with carbon fiber and keeping the carbon fiber look.same with the upper console in my GTA but adding a small gps where the analog counter is.

My vote is wrapping it with vinyl or leather. The problem with textured spray paints is sometimes they are too textured. they'll snag fibers off your clothes or off of a rag. And you cant really "clean" it easily. So once it gets dusty its a pain.
But experiment with it... if the spray doesnt work, you can always strip it and cover it later. Good ideas...Im watching to see where you end up with this.

Re: custom console start...
wow...long time since I've worked on it. Tonight i did some more sanding, spray painted it black, then went over that with a roll-on bed liner i got from orielly's. I think the end result was exactly what i wanted. It is textured, but smooth at the same time. It doesn't have any rough or sharp edges that will catch a cloth or clothing, but its rough enough that it filled in all the small imperfections i found when i spray painted it black(i hate fiberglass....it has to be very perfect...).
All in all: a successful project.
And not bad considering it was my first time playing with fiberglass....
I still have to make a console lid...i'm going to use wood and pad it and wrap it in leather, easy enough...
I'll post finished pictures when I get it put in the car with the lid and all.
What do you guys think? (paint is still damp in pix, that is the discoleration, will even out when dry)

Re: custom console start...
The bad: looks like any generic molded console that you can find in any chrysler or hyundai. a 4th gen swap would have been more stylish and practical, wont match interior no much you tell yourself it does, wasted a good pair of sleep pants.
take no offense man, its always great to see someone doing their own thing with these. should have at least wrapped it with black vinyl imho, but good job on it none the less

Looks pretty good man. Lol, I cant wait to see it cleaned up, dried, and in the car (The paint discoloration is a little hard to look at atm, but that's not your fault, and im not insulting it in any way). Look really good man, definitely be proud of yourself. I enjoyed seeing it come along! 5 stars!

When i learn to fiberglass im going to make a custom console. but if you havent already gotten to the point where you cant put your window switches in, what do you think about putting them where the old tiny A/C vents that were on the side, theyd be out of the way and they arent hard to hit. just an idea, thats what im thinking about doing with mine.

Re: custom console start...
looks ok but I would prefer the stock anyday, plus you had the center console clock very hard to find in nice shape

In the ashtray? Not by a long shot. With the metal tray in, it sits ON the tray. With it removed, its all crooked & sloppy.
But they fit beautiful inside the console. Wedge in PERFECTLY and come right out, if needed. Maybe onle 1/16" wider than the available space.

I think it's awesome that you did all of this yourself so your car could be different. And I like the fact you ditched the clock, despite what some enthusiasts say it was hideous. Any pics of the finished product? Great work so far!

Re: custom console start...
id like to see a final product not too sure about how i feel about the bedliner for paint? but to each his own you did a freakin bang uo job with this...a suggestion for paint (as a painter) if you ever change it get a real smooth finish bondo etc...then use the cheap rattle-can crackle paint (any color) then several coats of a satin finish ,that will give you a smooth but original finish (just my two cents) again kudos on the project...i kinda like he one thread where the guy uses plexiglass and tupperware in place of the ashtray
