I was wondering if any body here has a recomindation on a replacement shock for the rear hatch, i dont know if i just go to the parts store and get what ever or is there a up grade, what ever would make it easier for my wife to open the hatch, shes tired of my stick proping set up

 

Parts store, JY sometimes you can find good ones, and someone just put up a set for sale in the classifieds.

 

Any major parts store like Autozone, O'reilly, etc. should have them, just shop around so you get a good price, sometimes these things can be overpriced. Also, make sure you get the rear defroster model if you have rear def. The basic struts will not have the little tabs to connect your wires for the rear defroster.

If you have never changed these before, I recommend having someone to help with the replacement too. The deck lid is deceptively heavy once those struts are off of it.

We sell them for your Camaro,and the difference between the ones we sell and the local parts store, is that our hatch struts are all set to the correct retention settings vrs factory options. The local parts store is a one size fits all.

I got a pair of Monroe 901020. Your local auto parts store probably has them. I got them from Summit just because I had a coupon (or something like that). They were about $36 each.

There are different models depending whether you have

1. no wiper or spoiler
2. either a wiper or a spoiler
3. both a wiper and a spoiler

I got (2) because my 89 IROC has a small spoiler and no wiper. Bad choice. The shocks are way too strong. In warm weather, the hatch flies open quickly and goes "thud" when it reaches the fully open position; you can actually feel it sitting in the driver's seat. Apparently, the little IROC spoiler doesn't weigh as much as Monroe thought. Rather than return them to Summit (shipping!), I just run with one new one and one old one. It works...and I have a spare!

The point is: get them from a local store so they're easy to exchange if they're too strong or too weak.

 

I get all mine from the junkyard for 2-5 dollars apiece.Never had a problem as you can check them out first hand to make sure they work before you buy them.Sure beats paying the ripoff prices most places charge

 

I totally agree about the high prices that most retail places charge. The only way to make sure JY shocks are in working order is to test them when it's cold or cool. Gas shocks work great when it's hot even though they might be junk.
