Want a nice interior like my old car, where to start?
I love the outside of this 84 Z28 i just bought, but the inside bugs me a little. It's just huge feeling. too much room to move around, gauges are crappy, and i was hoping to get rid of some if not all of the square edges on things. Pretty much just modernize it without it looking cheezy and cheap. I might, if no other option is open, made molds and do fiberglass panels and wrap those in leather/suede (black on red or black on beige) Since its a red car.
My inspiration for the interior is my old car, that I cry myself to sleep about selling every night...
----------
i of course wouldnt want to make it identical, but just the flow of things i like so much. Is there a company that sells aftermarket interiors or anything?

I would look into how hard it would be to to swap in a 4th gen interior. I know that some people have done it, including Dash and all.

eh, I have a 4th gen already tho I definately don't want something stock. Theres gotta be a place that makes aftermarket interiors...like full dashes and everything
oh and does anyone know who makes gauges that look similar to the ones in the pics? they have a soft amber backlight also.
thanks

Re: Want a nice interior like my old car, where to start?
I guess theres no real limit. It is something i would plan on saving up for depending on how much it would end up costing me. If the price is right for what I get, then that's what it'll be. I planned on this car being a project from day 1, I want to do it up from the bottom up.
The biggest challenge is going to be getting it to handle how i want. That's what is going to break my wallet lol. throwing an aluminum motor up front, limited slip inthe rear with independent rears/double wishbone and dbl wishbone in front is going to be fun....

There are no premade aftermarket interior parts specifically for these cars really so you have to be creative. A lot of guys do the 4th gen swap, personally I love the character of the third gen interiors and would never try to update it and make it look like something it's not, to each his own. Congrats on the upgrade from the ***** btw. As far as similiar gauges to those I forget what type specifically but autometer makes a series that looks similiar to that. There's a company that makes a premade gauge cluster that fits third gen maro dashes to accept aftermarket gauges but most guys make their owns due to price. If you're good at fabricating or good at paying someone who's good at fabricating the sky is the limit.

These cars can made to handle insanely good with all of the aftermarket stuff out there that's already available.. As far as the independent rear I remember seeing some guy who swapped a D44 from a c4 corvette into an f-body.. probably way more trouble than its worth tho.. the factory setup works well and with the right parts can really handle quite well.. You also plan on fabricating and adding an upper control arm in the front? That's a very different idea.. never heard of anyone doing that.. Defently put progress pics in the fabrication section.. it may not handle as well as some of the aftermarket stuff that's already out there for these cars.. hell chances are it won't, but it's kind of origional and I'd like to see it..

It's already been said, but again don't worry about handling, these cars ride on RAILS. If I were you I would dump some money into a stock suspension setup. It's beefy and can really pull some G force especially when you start throwing aftermarket parts at it.
As for the interior, your wallet is your limit. Look around locally for some custom shops, see if you can find somebody who fabricates custom vehicle interiors.

sounds good, I'll take you guyss word on the suspension. Also, anyone happen to know the weight of this camaro (350 block/700r tranny) and maybe its front to back weight ratio?

Re: Want a nice interior like my old car, where to start?
I love the 'retro' hard edged interior. I think that's one of the coolest parts of the car and it matches the hard exterior lines. But if you want curves go 4th gen or custom.
Check out spohn.net for all your suspension needs.

Re: Want a nice interior like my old car, where to start?
yea, I've been thinkin about the interior and I guess too many curves wouldnt match the rest of the car. I would like to take some of the harsh edges off a few corners, definately make a nice gauge cluster, and add some nice material to the inside. Maybe I'll pull all the interior pieces and make molds from them, make a few slight alterations, make final fiberglass pieces and wrap em in leather and suede.
I was thinking maybe...smooth black leather (with a bit of a cushion) on the whole dash and down the consol. Then a red microsuede or alcantara on the door panels, but wrapping the long door handles and the rest of the plastic right there in leather too. then put in a brushed aluminum or brushed nickel door handle to replace the plastic piece...
I'll post pics when this picks up and gets rolling in a few weeks here hopefully. I don't want to take away from the original shapes too much, but add a touch of modern luxury and smoothness to it.
Here lies my inspiration lol:

I do think the door panels could definitely use an update. I think maybe keeping the same lines with the interior but smoothing them out a little would look good.
Just try not to make it look like an overdone kids car. This isn't a 1/4 million dollar Lambo either.
Good luck. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm criticising because I love innovation.

5 asterisks, 5 letters... the car was a 'Mazda'. I was under the impression the asterisks represented the import vehicle he didn't wanna get caught naming. lol.

aw come on, mazda's the only import car I'll ever give props to (besides the german ones of course)
and yes miRob, I agree, overdoing it is not my style either, don't want it looking like chucky cheese lol. I want it to look like something that could have come out of the factory, if Chevy felt like adding a 5k pricetag on the car for a "luxury sport" interior package
