Removing tint on hatch

Removing tint on hatch
I'd like to know how many of you have went through this. My rear hatch was tinted, however it doesn't look dark so I'm assuming one layer has been peeled off. It looks baked on to the defroster grid too. When I look in the rearview mirror it looks all blurry and it drives me nuts. I know the best method for removing it is the dish soap/garbage bag method in the sun, but it would be so much easier to do with the hatch off the car. If I take the hatch off and turn it upside down on the ground how easy is it to break? I keep reading to only support it by the metal trim, so does that mean I shouldn't turn it upside down?

Re: Removing tint on hatch
just peel it off best you can. and use rubbing alcohol on the glue. and the tougher spots use brake cleaner on it. thats what i did. took me 3 hours and the hatch glass was spotless no glue no tint

Look carefully at the alignment and you'll probably see that the sides are aligned and the spoiler is all that's off. The painted portion of the hatch probably needs to be removed, however, resealing that is probably a pain. I recently aligned the rear spoiler of another car by adjusting the 1/4 panel spoiler pieces. The rear deck spoiler has no play in the screw holes, but the sides do.
As for the tint, any suggestions on doing this with the hatch on the car with defroster grids?

If your looking for any advice on tint removal, I found the best way was steel wool and straight ammonia. Make sure you do it outside and Id wear a respirator, but it works extremely fast and easy... Just my

I took my hatch off yesterday and removed all of the tint. It seemed like I pulled about five layers off (probably the factory layer too). I diluted Windex with water and added a little Dawn dish liquid and then sprayed the window. I then put black plastic garbage bags over it and let it sit for about 30 minutes in the sun. The glue came off with minimal scrubbing. For the stubborn spots I used a little Citrus Goo-Gone and it worked really well.

lol been there....had to take purple tint of my firebird when i first got it, lemme just say, what a bitch! I used a heatgun and razor blade and kept the hatch on, wasn't too bad considering that I first tried it with a hair dryer lol. the tint in between the top defroster grid is annoying to get i recommend a smaller razor blade for that. good luck

Re: Removing tint on hatch
I learned a trick from a friend the other day, It involved me removing my back tint which was using a razorblade and brake cleaner. Its like a Couple of $'s a can at walmart or napa etc etc and it gets the glue off so easy its not even funny. You spray it on the glue after the tint is removed and the glue disapates easier than spraying windex on the windows. Wipe it off with an old rag you can throw away though.
Other then that I went into the top of the window where the grooves are and individually got those out with a razor blade also. Personally i think it came out good.

Re: Removing tint on hatch
When i was trying to get my 87 thru inspection the state told me my damn tint was to dark... which sucks cuz it looked really good. Anyway so i had to take off both the drivers and passengers side window as well as the rear hatch. Well i talked to my father then other people and pretty much a razor blade was the only answer i was getting. Well my mother did a search on the internet and showed me an article where the person used a clothes steamer (the portable kind) and then heated up the window and it peeled right off. So i tried this method and except for where the defroster lines are i didn't have a single problem getting the tint off.... literally peeled right off. Anyway thats the short version, if u want more details let me know.
