Re: Power Window Conversion
I was talking about the power window harness.
You got to love power windows. I remember all the times last summer leaning over my center console with the shifter *** in my side to adjust the window or put it up when it started raining. Thats particularly fun when you are messing with the window, driving, and then the car stalls out. Good times

okay, i'll have to look for that ground when i get the car back, I might remember seeing one on the harness that goes up into the center console... is this the right one?
and yeah, i'm not the tallest one thats ever owned a third gen, so leaning over is a difficult task! power windows will be NICE!

Yeah, the window ground is right under the switches in the center console. I got the lock ground and window ground confused

Hey Titan, thanks for posting those pics...I didn't realize they changed things in '89. I guess if I'd gotten into building my wreck I'd have figured that out by now.

Re: Power Window Conversion
No problem, glad I could help out. The change in the wiring harness confused the heck out of me for the longest time. I was trying to put a power lock harness from an 89 in my 87 and couldn't figure out why there was no plug to match up with the harness. Who would have guessed that they changed things in 89 and not 90 like everything else .

Re: Power Window Conversion
okay, i have to bring this thread back to life...
I have installed the wiring harness, grounded the harness under the console, pluged the harness into the existing car harness, and put in a 30 amp fuse, into the fuse box... and my motors STILL don't work. I have a hard time believing that both motors are junk... does anyone have ANY IDEAS?!?!?!?!? i'm hoping its just something small that i'm missing, but i really have no clue at all. please help this is killing me!

Re: Power Window Conversion
Hmmm...ok. You should have tested the motors before you stuck them in. I usually use a battery charger. Put the negative on the motor body, and the positive to one of the power prongs. The motor should work. Anyhow, you're past that point now. You should start by checking that the window harness is getting power. The power wire should be the orange wire, but you'll have to check your diagrams to be sure. If you don't have power to the circuit, nothing will work. I don't have access to my manuals this weekend, but I'll check on Monday to try to help you out. Good luck, and feel free to message me directly.

Thanks for the reply. I have NOT put the motors in yet. they are lying on my garage floor, while the manuel cranks are still in the car. I will check to find out what the power lead is. what would cause it to not have power? is there an extra relay somewhere? or a hidden something?

Re: Power Window Conversion
Ok, well, start with testing the motors. The motor body is the ground, so if you don't have them well fastened to the door, they won't work because they won't be grounded. Generally, GM's power wires are orange with a black stripe, orange, or in some cases, pink. As far as hidden stuff goes, I'm not sure, but I know that my own 89 GTA does NOT have power to its windows or locks, so, perhaps I'll troubleshoot that problem on Monday now that I'm off work and we'll both get an answer. A GM guy told me that there is a wire that powers the entire system somewhere under the hood? I don't know if I buy that, but like I said, I'll check it out on Monday and see what happens. I should be able to figure it out in a day. But I would start with checking to make sure that you are getting power from the main feed from under the dash.

Re: Power Window Conversion
yeah, i'll check that first thing in the morning. I wondered about the grounding of the motors... i thought it might be all part of the wiring harness tho. I'll run an alligator clip to the door frame, and ground out the motor, to see if that works... that would be nice if thats all it was

Re: Power Window Conversion
Nope, they ground to the door. One prong on the motor makes it go up, the other down.

Re: Power Window Conversion
okay, i have power to the switch under the dash WITH the 30 amp fuse in. so i know its connected up. If i take the fuse out, no power. so thats a plus knowing that that is the only thing sending power into the harness. My power locks are not hooked up yet, but the harness I have has them attached, so when i push the buttons, I can hear the actuator under the dash clicking on and off. another plus. BUT... i STILL can't get the motors to move. I grounded them to the door and still nothing, now i'm really lost! haha
does anyone know where i can get a wiring diagram for the power windows?

Re: Power Window Conversion
Sounds like a bad ground to me... Check to see if you are getting power to the motors at the plug. You've already got power to the switches, so you're close to success.

Re: Power Window Conversion
WE HAVE MOVEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So... just a note for anyone whos doing this (or maybe i'm just the dumb one, but thats fine) When you look in the owners manual and see that fuse 15 is for your power windows, be sure to LOOK where fuse 15 is. Because if you use logic, where 15 is, your actually in 16...
Hince why the locks worked, and not the motors!!!!!!
Its great how you figure these things out when your installing your fog lights... haha
