10 Minutes to new visors!
OK, so I got tired of trying to find decent visors, buying them online and trying the junkyards I recovered my sail panels and my C&C t-top headliner so I decided to experiment with the visors. I was going to send them out to get sewn, but I decided to try something at home first. The materials you will need are:
1- An old set of visors
2- Headliner material
3- Adhesive (I used contact cement but headliner spray could be used)
4-Poster board or any thin cardboard of your choice.
First I carefully removed the stitches from the old visors so I could reuse the cardboard as a template. (now would be a good time to inspect the plastic inserts in your visors, and replace if necessary)
[IMG][/IMG]
Next I traced the old cardboard and cut out a template from the poster board.
[IMG][/IMG]
I then traced the template on the headliner material leaving about 1/2" of extra material (I would leave more like an inch) After the material was cut I spread some contact cement on the edges of the poster board, let it dry, and folded the material over.
To finish them up I spread contact cement on the visor wood and the back of the visors I just finished, they tacked up and I pressed them together. They worked out really well, the seams are nice, and I am very happy. I just thought I would share this with you all for a quick and inexpensive fix

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
Thanks guys, I made an extra set and I am going to have my wife try to sew a straight stich on the bottom seam, I will post up when she is done. At least with them glued together it will be easier to sew.

UPDATE
I was not really happy with the seams, they were ok but didn't look like OEM. My wife has been really busy and hasn't had a chance to sew them so I grabbed a needle and some thread this evening and finished them. I still have an extra set for her to experiment on, but I am very happy with my results, what do you think of the final product?

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
hey Duke i was looking at your idea and had a thought. is it possible to just fold everything over and not glue the poater boad part to the wood panel then just sew it together or is this a must to glue to the wood? all in all i dig the idea and will use this myself as this is the one then that kept me from doing all of my own int (minus the seats).

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
Yes, I experimented and found the easiest thing to do was infact just glue the material over the poster board so it holds and sew it, I had a few to work with. Here is the final product installed, I also redid my headliner and sail panels.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
My visors cost me $4 and a week. I bought a 5 gallon bucket and a box of RIT dye at Wal Mart.
I put the dye powder in, filled the bucket halfway to mix the dye powder good, dropped in the visors, and filled the bucket FULL. To the point of overflowing, so it leveled out at the VERY top.
6 days later, I pulled them out, let then air dry 2 days, and now I have black visors! Just did a set for my buddy too.
Of course, this only works if they are in good condition, and you don't like the color. Ours were tan.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
nice work and exactly the way to make new visors. We have an upholstery shop and use this method to make new visors.
for the guys who want to do their headliners, once you have the headliner out of the car, pull the old material off and then use a wire brush to wipe the old foam off the board before gluing in the new material. If you do not scrap the old foam off,the new one will look like doodoo and not stay up.
We will be redoing the interior in our formula and i will post up as we go.
great job Duke!

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
Nice man, those look great! I replaced mine this summer when I did my headliner, but I just ordered aftermarket ones because I didn't feel like stitching anything.
What did you end up using for the trim on your t-tops? I just wrapped my material over the bar and under the seals (the way C&C did it) but I see yours doesn't go all the way up?

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
I may be wrong cause I havent messed with a 3rd gen in a long time but a hardtop headliner will not owrk to cut out a ttop headliner.I think the parts aroud the t-tops curl up some. But if you end up doing that, take pics and explain it all to the massess..lol

I have C&C t-tops, they are an after market t-top. C&C converted hard top cars into t-top cars and all they did was cut the hartop headliner and reused it with a little work.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
thats alot of work IMO for something thats not really needed.
82IRONDUKE,the visors do look good.
I just like the look of no visors at all.
Of course after replacing the headliner mat. and not cutting any holes where the visors are supposed to be.
Just makes a cleaner look to me.

It's fun, easy, and inexpensive and you get a good feeling when you sit in your baby. You can say I DID THAT

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
I would send you a template but my scanner is not that big. If I were you I would just use the visor board and leave an extra inch of cardboard all around. Use the pictures as reference and cut to fit.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
Sorry to bump a older thread, but I just want to thank Iron Duke for this "How 2". I was a bit intimidated by interior work for no reason at all. But this made it a quick and cheap for me (38$ and some change) and it looks damn good, so thanks.

Nice job iron duke, Im right now trying to make a decsion on keeping my visor or deleted them. I figure I can run a 4 to 5" tint on the top of the windshield and that will be that, but not sure yet. I need to redo my ttop headliner also. Hope the board is still good enough for another recovering.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
I was getting pissed at my old visors, especially the driver's side. It would not stay up for the life of me so I was constantly pushing it back up. I finally just removed them entirely. I was going to get a new headliner, and install it without visors. I am always wearing sunglasses so it shouldn't be too bad.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
Yeah, driving at sunset or sunrise is very tough, even with the visors it is still very hard to see. I was with a buddy one morning and he clipped a bike rider because he couldn't see anything the bike rider was on the wrong side of the road, good thing she wasn't hurt.

Re: 10 Minutes to new visors!
First question is did you already have a mirror? If you did you already know that you could just cut slits in the fabric and pop the mirror back in place. If you didn't have a mirror you would first have to find out were the holes are supposed go, carefully drill out the wood (to the right size) and NOT poke through the other side of the fabric lol , pop the mirror into place, and walla! you should now have a mirror!! if you want i can get you the size and exact location of the holes if yours a t-top visor. just ask if you got any questions
