Hurst Dual-Gate
Installed a new Hurst Dual-Gate in my 85. Works very well, but instructions SUCK. Poor grainy pictures and vague procedures. Got it all figured out, wanted something new to replace my 20-yr. old Mega-Shifter, which is for sale on Parts For Sale forum BTY.

I was looking to put one of those in my car. Looks really good.
What were some trouble areas??

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
You have to place and remove shifter 3 times for proper adjustment. Spring that holds right side shifter area cover plate requires thinking outside the box to install. If you get one, I can explain that procedure. Cable is a little long and requires nylon wiretying it to speedo cable and crossmember. Getting neutral safety switch tab in shifter slot requires a steady hand . Like everything else, doing it the first time is always harder. As I said, instructions need to be updated to this century. Looks good in car, kind of a retro look. I would recommend this shifter to anyone. B&M Mega Shifter uses lousy back-up and neutral switches which require lots of adjustment to get right. Hurst uses OEM swith which is superior. Thing to note: This is not a ratchet shifter like the Mega Shifter. Hit it too hard and your in the wrong gear or neutral. Not the thing to do at 5500rpm's. All in all, I think it looks better in my car, but that's just me. Badman P.S. I love your little dancing guy.

Is Hurst still making those for 3rd gens? I would like to have one for my RS but Summit doesn't show a listing. Where did you find one?

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
I called summit concerning this very shifter. They told me that they (Hurst) didn't offer this shifter cause it was discontinued.... Go figure.... Guess I'll have to go to go fast parts... Thanks for the link ....

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
I have one that I have not installed yet. I am currently learning how to use a friends $50K CNC milling machine (in his garage ) and have plans to mill a new console plate out of aluminum to replace the Hurst dual gate plate. I have plans to just eliminate the standard sind gate into D,2,and 1 and only allow the shifter to go into the ratchet gate side.
I still have to work out the details of the new plate to allow for good clearance of the shifter into its slected gear points, yet tight enough to block slop and to block entry down the the standard side.,p>
A quick sketch shows the new console plate design to look aprox like this- It will be a side to side gate rather than the up and down gate the factory detent button calls for. This will make the shifter selector more modern like the new gates you see on lets say a Lexus, Mercedes, or such.
When compleated, I will have it on CAD floppy so I can duplicte them and sell them if desired purchasers are interested. It will still take me a month or two to get proficiant on this machine and do a few prototypes until I get the desired result.
Here is a quick sketch of what I am going after. The dotted grey area is the standard gate being eliminated from the shifter to go down via being blocked by the upper console plate(it just hides it) I missed the 4th gear (4th is Drive or 'D')on the gate select on the rough sketch- opps, it will be there on the CAD file design. This is just a quick example and is not accurate- just an example of the thought.

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
You're going to need to modify the working of the shifter itself to get that to work.

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
I have alrready pulled of the stainless blocking plate you have to manipulate with your finger to get the shifter to access that side. Without that little block plate it just clicks right over into the ratchet gate. I am going to try and mill a bottom plate out of delrin to be a filler plate (secondary plate) that hold to the shifter arm and blocks any debris from entering down into the shifter gate (you know: ju-ju bees, pennies, misc crap you set there and can fall into the open slot.
I have already tried it and it will work as I am designing it, Other wise I would not be wasting my time. Of course I checked it out for function- I said already the scktch I quickly did is inaccurate.

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
I have a B&M megashifter in my camaro, and it sucks. I cant even get the car in park right now. I just ordered the Dual Gate from the website above. Gofast parts... We will see if they have it.

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
Well that sucks. I guess they will be collector items now.
I just actully installed MasterCAM 10 onto my computer yesterday and am learning how it functions so I can make the file to mill the plate design I have (As stated before, I have unlimited access to a Bridgeport CNC milling machine in a friends garage and am now very proficiant at running programs as well as manual writing codes- nowq its just learning to use the CAD program which I have limited college specialized schooling in this 20 years ago).
I stongly believe the discontinuation of the Hust dualgate is sole due to the uglyness of the dual gate console plate- (My opinion). I plan to fix that problem and make it look not so cheezy. The idea of the rachet gate is great, But who wants the 'hers' side of the his and her patterns as the shifter was originally marketed as until they went politcally correct with the dual gate phrase. This top plate will hide the soft side and eliminate the function of the shifter to go down that side. It will look and function solely as an automatic rachet shifter and will have full function to just stay in just drive or OD as normal use dictates for daily street driving on the rachet side.
Patiances with me please because the milling machine is 40 miles from my house at my team owners hoouse and I am still learning the program files. Once finished with a prototype, I will post results and pics and will have the files to duplicate this gate plate for future orders.
This project WILL get completed because I already have the shifter and the wife is on me to get it finished and into her car so she does not break more nails pushing the factory detent button on the factory shifter.

Re: Hurst Dual-Gate
My IROC use to have issues getting in park....was the shift cable. I look at it every oil change and it seems to be fine.
