Air Bag Fears

I have a 91 that has a 383 carbrd engine. There is no modual as it has been removed. Yesterday while I was driving the tach needle went all the way to the right and a red light "INFL REST" came on on the dash. My fear is that the bag could detonate on it's own anytime. Should I attempt to remove the bag or just leave it alone and ignore the light? Replacing the wheel was on my list of things to do anyway, but I have never replaced a steering wheel before. I want to eventually put an aftermarket wheel on the car. I guess I am asking, Is there a way to disarm the bag for now or is it a non issue?
Thanks
Dave
