New Racing Seats

Dear Fellow Third-Geners:

Any ideas where I can get some good quality racing seats (and matching brackets) for a 1987 RS, at a reasonable price. I see so many out there for these rice-rockets and, although they look good, I don't know if they're going to last. They seem to range from $200 a seat all the way up to a couple of thousand (Recaro, Momo, Sparco). I was going to get some Corbeaus (CR-1 models) but thought that I'd ask here first. Also, what price range should I be looking at? All I want is someting that looks good and holds be in when I make turns.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience?

Re: New Racing Seats

One thing to decide is whether you're willing to fabricate some mounting brackets, or if you want a bolt-in seat. Most inexpensive seats come with universal sliders that will require modification in order to work in your car. More expensive seats usually have sliders available at an additional cost that will allow them to be a true bolt-in.

If you're handy enough to fab up your own brackets, there are some tasteful inexpensive seats out there. Here are a couple of styles that I carry, which don't have the cheezy graphics that most inexpensive seats have:

If you have any questions about the seats, PM me.

Depending what you actually need, some 4th gen trans am seats look great and hold muuuch better than stock.

Re: New Racing Seats

Are they going to be used for racing purposes or just a street car with the race look? I bought a pair of the Kirkey Economy drag seats and I think they are pretty comfortable. In fact I am using them as gaming seats until the car is ready for them.

Re: New Racing Seats

I just put a pair of these in my car:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160095770227

I read a couple feedback on these seats and the buyers seemed happy so I took a chance... for $280 shipped a pair I can't complain one bit, they're at least as comfortable as the stock seats. I'm pretty sure they're naugahyde and not real leather, but you really can't beat the price. The sliders included are a perfect match in width and about 1 inch off in length when compared to the bolts in the floor. They needed brackets fabricated that were about 2" high to put them in the right place. If you bug me about getting pictures I can do so in the next couple days.

They do if you buy the correct brackets, but I don't recall those being very cheap.

Re: New Racing Seats

I just bought mine for a cheap replacement... I guess my expectations were pretty low and I can see that someone might expect the big "dial" to actually be functional. I just read the description and saw it had recline forward and backward. You really can't get anything for cheaper though.

Another option would be to pony up the difference between the cheap ebay seats and a set of summit racing seats which are something like $300 before shipping.

Re: New Racing Seats

Hey ChillPhatCat- I'd like to see a picture if you have a chance. I was thinking about getting almost the exact same seats, except with a little bit of red on them as well.

My drivers seat is all torn up, and really anything would be an improvement.

Re: New Racing Seats

I have had some experience with replacing the seats in my camaro with racing seats. The first set i used were APC, not a good call though because they were too high so i had to come up with something else. I looked on ebay and got a different set of seats, i believe they are called JDM and i paid like 135.00 total for a set. To make them fit i bought the corbeau brackets for 82-92 camaro and had to do some cutting and drilling to the bottom of the new seats, but they fit perfectly and look like they belong there. I would check dimensions of all the seats you are looking at before you get them.

Here's a shot of those seats installed in the car, the interior still needs some fine tuning, but you get the idea.

Re: New Racing Seats

Those sesats in Chilcats car are sitting way too high. I would never firt into that car without my head crushed against the headliner. If you reference the bolsters on the flat part of the seat, you can clearly see his are sitting higher than the center console. Mine are about 3 inches lower overall than his are and my head is still very close to the headliner with mine (I am 6'4 238lbs)

Re: New Racing Seats

They are definitely up a little higher than the original seats, I still have some adjustments to make, the brackets I made were 2" high, it would have been better to make them 1" or less, I'll be modifying them to drop it by an inch, maybe more. I'm 5'7" and I've got about 4" between my head and the T-top. Yeah if you're 6'4 I would recommend bolting the front of the seet straight to the floor.

Wow... yours are a lot lower... But I'm not sure if mine are as high as you're thinking, I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow to show how high they are.
