Stupid HVAC question, hissing and not working
MOST of the time my HVAC controls hiss like crazy. Pretty much anytime I have the selector anywhere but "off" the box hisses loudly. Sometimes I will move it to "defrost", it will hiss loudly for a few miles, and then anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes later the gates will finally engage, the hissing will go away, and I will start getting air to the defrost vents. I can stick my hand back there (no radio) and feel the circle selector thing and this is definitely where the leak is. Do I need to replace the whole box or can I replace that little circle thing somehow?
Also, I NEED somebody to explain to me how the box should be directing air through the vents. For each selection on the AC/Heater box, WHICH vents should be spitting air? I ask this because I go from "heater" to "bi-lev" to "vent" and so on and I cannot really tell any sort of consistent difference between them because my gates don’t properly engage. When I get this replaced, it would be nice to know what SHOULD be happening.

The vents are vacuum controlled. The switches on the front panel for the most part just redirect the vacuum. I suspect that one or more of the hoses has pulled away from it proper location, or it has a leak.
Take the panel off and remove the 4 screws holding the control in place, pull the entire unit forward and check and see it that's what happened.

I already have the whole thing taken out. Console is gone, everything is gone. HVAC box is just sitting on the top of the tunnel with wires and tubes coming out of it. I know that it is leaking, and I know that it is leaking from the circular redirector thing, or at least where one of the tubes plugs into it. My question is assuming all the lines are connected as best I can, should I replace the whole box? Or can I replace just the part?
And also, like I asked in the second part of my initial post, I need to know what selections are supposed to do what. This is the only Camaro I have ever had and the HVAC has never worked so I do not know. This would be very helpful if somebody could write this up for me, I would be much more able to diagnose my problem.
