Has anybody made new cupholders?

The factory cupholders in our cars suck ***! I'd like to see some pics of cupholders people have made for our birds, or good ideas of where we can put some. I need some good ideas for a project car I'm working on.

most people are trying to ahold of the "crap" cupholders, because most everyone doesnt have them, just be glad you have anything at all, bottom line is theres not a good place to put cupholders.. the stupid door ones is honestly probably the best place in the car to put one without effecting comfort etc

The best thing to do, IMO, is to do a 4th gen console swap. I see you have a Firebird, so the swap will be fairly straightforward, unlike the Camaro swap, which gets a bit more involved. Install the later style console, and voila, 4 cupholders. Earlier style '93-'96 yields 1 cupholder.

I remember seeing a post quite a while back where someone turned the ashtray area into cupholders.

I remember a post on here about a cup holder. Guy had or got the old console with the clock, removed the clock and replaced it with a pen/pencile cup from Staples. Picture he posted looked real nice....even the black on the cup holder matched and it did not look halfazz.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

I see this is an old post on the 91 style molded plastic door cup and cassette/CD holder.. I have struggled with the placemrnt on the drivers door tooo long and finally had to take the drivers door holder off. Now I can get my foot in and out much easier. It was getting to the point that this was such an issue for my debilated left leg control - That it was remove the drivers door cup holder or get rid of the car. I'm not decrepit enough for that to happen I hope.!
Has anyone fashioned or relocated cup holder from the existing setup say higher up and rearward so you can get your foot uder it easier when you can't open the door all the way ? Currently I have made a temp kick plate following the outline of the impression of the cupholders outline and covered the 3 holes in the door panel. Any thoughts ?

In mine we bought this little one that is supposed to hang from the dash, and my dad pushed the little tab under the plastic on the left side of console and now there is a cupholder in front of the seat.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

Thats pretty much what I did with these group of 4 darkerker grey cup holders that came in a pack from Wal Mart. Not top line quality or looks but I can slip the downward edge in the rim by the cig /ashtray and it hangs down from there. I also made one that hangs froma block of wood wedged between the emergency brake and console. It is srewed to the bock one top goes over the brake handle and hangs down from there.. Which is a few inches closer and not a problem if I'm by myself.
I'm liking the easier exit and not having the cup holder press into my lower leg....
It may look odd with a perfect one on the passenger side and none on the driver but these doors swing is so wide. I feel trapped trying to get out in mall lots and not hit someones car sometimes. 13 W can be a pain in tight spaces. Thanks for reply if I come across some great holder that adapts easy I let you know.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

I know this is an old post too but from what I have seen the best looking cup holder I have seen is the one with the console clock or drilling a hole in the console for a cup holder in the same location, however if you have a manual trans like I do it's a terrible location for a cup holder. So far I haven't seen a decent cupholder solution other than swapping out center consoles for a 4th gen one if that's the route you want to go.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

I see that a 4th gen console has been brought up before. To be clear in my limited knowlwdge. are we talking Firebird or Camero 4 gen and 92 thru 95 or later ? color match is important. Also I have an Automatic. Unfortunatly my friend who is an excellent wood worker has passed away or we could have fashioned a custom console you thought was from some Jag or Bently all from wood. Anyone else the price would be way too much. I have the tan/ beechwood interior. Take care. Its finally convertible weather here, rainest spring in history in our area, which is nothing compaired to other parts of the country.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

Someone can make a killing if he designs one (aftermarket) like I have in my C5 Corvette. The C5 cupholders are even worse than the 3rd gen. They are about 1-2 inches deep and with any turn your cup will spill if you aren't holding onto it. Here's the link to what I put in my Vette. No drilling, no glue. It just slides into place in back of the center console. Pretty neat idea. Now, we just need one for our cars! http://www.customcorvetteaccessories...upholders.html

Wow, I like that double cup holder for the passenger side. I think I'll give it a try just to see how it fits. The debate is black - which is closer to console color or cashmere with my faded lighter tan interior. Will let you know when I get one .Thanks for the link.

Re: Has anybody made new cupholders?

I would test fit mine, but my interior in my Firebird is torn apart right now for a restoration. It has never fallen out of my Corvette even with two full glasses. Very nice fit. The problem you might run into is clearance in a Firebird since the lip would fit into the center console (versus a deep trim piece on the Vette), but it would be interesting to know how or if it works in a 3rd Gen.
