Collector Car Insurance

Getting ready to reinsure our 87 Iroc which has been (Heavily) modified
over the years.

Been insured with one of the biggies but have found out over the years
That ACV, actual cash value on what you state is not necessarily what
is going to happen if an incident happens.

Thinking of going to a classic car insurance company.
Have checked out Haggerty and Leland.

Any recommendations or advise with those with this kind of insurance.

Thanks

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I had a 98 TA with tons of crap done to it and had collector insurance on it. I found American Hoppyist Ins was the easyest and cheepest. I had insurance with them for 8 years with no problems at all. I had 30K agreed value and 250/50 ded on col/comp, and it was around $225 a year. I use to check every year to see if anybody was cheeper and never found better. Also they have no low mile Requirements. There number is 800-395-4835... If there is anything bad about them is they do not take payments, you have to pay for a year at a time.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

Thanks,

Will check them out.
Just want to make sure of company's track record.

Set mine at $37,000 and two quotes came back between
750.00 and 800.00 annually.

Thats a big difference
Also has to be garaged, Alarm and no more than 2500 a year
which I meet. Plus age, which I diffinately meet.

Call them tommorrow.

Thanks again.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

They do have a good track record as did check them out before I started with them 8 years ago. I just sold the car a month ago and called to cancel the policy and they strated asking questions why was I not happy and stuff.

I did not have to show any thing to get it started, but I did have to send lots of pics inside and out of the car. They did start out at 20k and I got them to bump it up to 30K. I had like 50k in the car so I still would have lost but it was better than nothing..

I've got pretty much the same coverage and rate, but my mileage is 3500/year right through State Farm...I've got my house, shop, and daily driver's through them too, so it's really handy. I suppose I could do better, but man I hate shopping for anything, but most of all shopping for insurance!!!!!!

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I have State Farm for my home, auto, etc...and i dropped them for insurance on my IROC & Formula...They would not give me what i wanted for agreed value. I went with Grundy. They were agreeable on the value, rates were competitive & the restrictions were modest. Nothing that is out of the ordinary for car shows, crusing etc...State farm isn't interested in covering classic or modified vehicles. They want to insure daily drivers..That is what my agent told me and we have had him for 15 years...

I would say it depends on the agent!!!! My agent goes out of his way to insure and help out guys around here with Hot Rods and Classics!!!!! They are independant agents.....Guess they probably tend to concentrate on what they know and like just like all of us do!!!! Heck, my lawyer is even a gearhead!!!!!

Re: Collector Car Insurance

The best policy hinges on daily use. If its a daily driver, then you may not save as much. I use American Collector, with a stated value of 10k. Im limited to 1500 miles a year and rec use only (Shows, cruises, etc). Its $140 a year, and since I only put 9k miles on the car since 2001, it fits me perfect. I also have a clean record so that helps of course.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

Grundy is a good one. It can't be a daily driver and really only to shows and stuff like that. Unlimited mileage though. You can do the power tour and not have a problem. Do cross country trips if there was an event the car was in, etc.

I have it on the GTO and WS6. State your value and take some pics, that's all I had to do.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I just got off the phone with American Collector or Hobbyist that has been mentioned in this thread. I asked for a $20k value with $0 deductibles and 100/300 liability limits. I was offered a few different mileage options, so I chose the 2500 miles a year. I was quoted $420 a year.

In contrast, Grundy has no mileage limits, $0 deductibles and the same liability for $315. With me being in Florida, there are different rates than other parts of the country. Grundy charges $1.40/hundred + ($33 + tax (florida's rates) = $35). I think I'll keep Grundy for now! Nobody has beaten their premiums in the 10 years I've had them.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I have J.C. taylor ins. that my agent hooked me up with. I have my IROC and my '69 firebird insured on the same policy. Stated value of $5,000 on the IROC and $20,000 on the bird. Only needed an appraisal on the bird. Year 'round coverage, never have to stop or start coverage, and premium for both is $281. You have to have cars garaged, and have to have daily drivers but other wise no major restrictons. So far I haven't had to make any claims so I can't comment on that aspect but otherwise I'm very satisfied. I have carried this coverage since '93 .

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I tried this route with a few companies - they won't insure me 'cause my daily driver is over 20 years old - even though I also have a motorcycle that is my true daily driver as I ride year 'round. And my 1997 Camaro doesn't count as a daily driver because BOTH parties in the household with licenses (my wife & I) HAVE to have daily drivers less than 20 years old - even though she works from home and doesn't drive anywhere! Then, I was also told the garage thing - too weird - like everything else in this crazy world.

If I only drove 2500 miles a year and I had a garage, why would I need insurance? What's left? I"m not asking for collision - if I'm dumb enough to drive into a tree, I should pay that myself. I just wanted covered against the idiot in the parking lot that opens his door into mine, since my paint job cost me do much. Only thing left here in this area (since we have very little snow) is a hurricane - I'm not going to pay anyone $400+ a year to save my car from a hurricane when I can just get in it and drive inland farther!

As usual, once again in my life I see no real need for insurance at all! Either they won't let you have it, or it's a total ripoff when they do, as they RARELY hold up to their end of the deal.

So if a tree falls on my car I guess I'll just have to do it all over again!

Re: Collector Car Insurance

Thanks for all the info.

Checked them all out and going with Haggerty because of cost
and coverage.
$655.00 annually.

Dropped it to $30.000 agreed value and full coverage.
Unlimited milage because of low milage on the clock.
5 pics,garaged,NO Nitrois,(There went that modification),
Told them already had bottle bracket installed in spare tire area, no hardware,
noise alarm,my hidden ign switch lockout, clean record.
Only driver,(She's not happy on that one )and age.

Others had to many restrictions
Alot of them said we had to have two cars other than Iroc as
main drivers.
We both use our our new (Exploder)

Thanks again

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I have Hagerty and pay less than $300 for a full year with no driving limits or deductable. Just last year I had the plastic fins on the alternator fan explode on my 86 and it dented the hood really bad. Just out of curiosity I told them what happened and it was coming home from a cruise. They only asked for pictures and covered it for the estimate I had to repair it. They are very good to deal with and I say they held up their end of the bargin.

Out of curiosity what was the agreed value that was set.
I'm looking at $1000 deduct on $30.000 agreed value.
I still have a month with Hartford before I switch the Iroc

Thanks

Re: Collector Car Insurance

At Grundy's $1.40 per 100, your $30k comes in at $455 (check the formula above). Hagerty has never been able to touch the rates I get from Grundy.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

Scott,

Like said, have a month to get the best deal.

Only having one additional car, Explorer, for two of us might be the
reason.

Pushing over 30K in machine work and hardparts, Motor,Suspension,
sound system,Paint,Body ect.
Can't count labor but over 10K if I had my shop back.

Actual Cash value kind of scary in case of incident.
On a total they turn around and say, Well, that sure was a nice car, but
high book is 5K

Will start negotiating.
Thanks

Re: Collector Car Insurance

I am thinking of putting the 84 on a collector policy because I already know its not going to be a daily driver. Considering how the starter, alternator and heater core went and had to be replaced over the course of a month after I got it running again its safe to see why it won't be a daily driver. I have a 2000 Subaru Outback and the Trans Am is a project that will probably always be a work in progress.

I was looking at going to Hagerty for three reasons, first I have connections with the company as I have two friends who work there. And second, I hear from friends that their policies, coverage, etc is great. Finally, I had the chance to meet and talk with McKeel Hagerty himself and I really liked what I saw in him. He is a bonafide car guy who restored a Porsche 911, I believe it was his first car and he did almost all the work on it. I mentioned the TA to him and he said it would be a fun car to drive when its done and he understood why I liked it and what I was doing with it. I believe for me in NJ it was going to be 420 per year with no mileage limit and a 10,000 agreed value. I knocked it down to 5500 and it dropped into the 3 something range for the year. I am probably going to go with 10K because I have yet to see a nice L69/T5 car with T-tops go for less than that if I did see one for less it was either a total project in some cases worse than mine or it was in the 7-8K range.

Re: Collector Car Insurance

Talked to Grundy and am impressed.

Raised my value back up to the 37K from 30K and came in at
$555.00, no deduct and unlimited milage.

Have to meet there criteria but we do.
Big difference from $680.00-$800.00, milage, deductable, single driver,
No Nitrois.

Just have to check and see if fire and theft are included.
Now I can add the Nitrous hardware to the bottle bracket already installed out back.
Coudn't run with Haggerty.

Thanks Scott.

10K, no deductable.

Weird but Grundy didn't want to quote me a price. Said I was too new, 4 years ago. Could have been the rep that didn't want to mess with it. I might have to check into this....

Maybe Mods and milage come into play.
The more you have in it means your gentler on it.

Have under 30K on mine and when I put miles on it I sure don't
pamper it.

Yours is 1 year older than mine so thats not a reason.
Maybe agent having bad day
