91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
I had this 91 Firebird come across my marketplace today - and while I don't necessarily want to buy it, I was very curious if anyone had any historical information on this, as I have never seen one of these before. I tried some searching on this site and the rest of the web, and have come up empty handed.
Just think its pretty neat if its real, does anyone else on this site own one of the other 4 if so? May go check it out if I get some free time.

Not my thing, but a cool piece of history. Would be nice for someone to restore it.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
Found another picture of this same car using google - not much additional info, although can see that its a 5.0 TBI motor - and the "Roof Scoops" mentioned in the above doc

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
Looks fake. For it to have been a promotional vehicle, it sure does have a lot of stick on parts that don't look like quality. Looks like somebody visited the Autozone "performance" aisle in the late 90's/early 2000's. Plus, the Pontiac logo on that paper just doesn't look right to me. I could be wrong, but doesn't look right to me.

Those hood scoops are straight out of the autozone aisle for sure haha

I'm trying to figure out how they got a TBI 305 to run 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds.

This is one of the most hideous Firebirds I've ever seen.
0 to 60 in 4.9 is knocking on TTA territory with sticky tires and turbo weather.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
My big question is about the "1991 Car of the Year".... According to who? You would think that would be specified.
The hood scoops are definitely the same ones found in every parts store in the early/mid 00's. At the time, you couldn't throw a dead cat without hitting a vehicle sporting those hideous scoops.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
that letter is pretty suspect. Why would the author congratulate the enquirer on owning a rare care despite first noting that they have no way to verify the car as being the 1 of 5.
depressing to see fraudulent provenance; I mean someone prepared that from the outset with the clear intent of misleading

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
Well at the very least this has provided an entertaining thread! Every time I look at it it seems more and more over-the-top fake. Doesn't make any sense to me, but might just be used as a tool to scam payments online.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
I also find the entire letter very odd. I find it suspect that it says it doesn't keep track of those cars, but then lists specific items that are all oddly very easy to find on that car. Then it uses a post script ("P.S.") to basically reinforce how rare the car is. I don't recall seeing P.S. on other verified official Pontiac documentation. The whole letter seems like a set up for a sucker to think it's real.

That's not to say that your local Elks Club couldn't have it's own COTY award. There may be hundreds of them. But the MT version is the most well known.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
Lots of really good comments in this thread. I'll add one other observation that maybe someone can explain. What's with the blue paint underneath? I'm not aware of any manufacturer using blue Primer, and the white paint on top is purported to be original given all the lettering and stuff on top still.

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
According to the VIN the car originally was 98U (Bright Blue).
Lots of suspicious things from the letter to the car itself. There's nothing in the VIN that shows it's anything than any other Firebird besides having the Sport Appearance package. It was also built around 8/3/1990

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
I think for most car folks, when you say it won CAR OF THE YEAR, you think Motor Trend. But I knew that wasn't right. 1991 COTY was the Chevrolet Caprice (I had to do a sales demo on the car when it came out).
That's not to say that your local Elks Club couldn't have it's own COTY award. There may be hundreds of them. But the MT version is the most well known.

The 1991 Bubba's BBQ & Bait Shop Annual Rib Cookoff and Car Cruise First Prize Winner!
The whole thing is a fraud. And 4.9 seconds with a 5.0 TBI? Even if true, who paints that on a door?

Re: 91 Firebird Promotional Prototype?
True. I mean, it already comes with the best peel-out proven, cylinder heads and intake you can get, from 0-4500 RPM...which is just about perfect for 0-60's with 2.5x gears!
