ASC clarification

I have this '89 that I have owned for about 7 years. I have always been under the impression that it was stock, except for the exhaust and stereo. There is, however. this sticker on the door jamb saying it was modified by Automobile Specialty Company. I have no idea what could have been modified and I

have no paperwork. I also have this logo on the trunk and have no idea what it means. Other than telling me that I need a new top, can anybody be of any help? Thanks!

Re: ASC clarification

The rear sticker is an add on that a previous owner put on the car. The ASC sticker was applied to all 3rd gen "factory" convertibles, and some that weren't factory, but dealer optioned. GM did not do in house convertibles on the 3rd gens, so when they started offering it in 1987, they used ASC. Very similar to them using SLP for the SS upgrades on the 4th gens.

John is quite knowledgeable, for sure, but I think Scott covered it completely.

The sticker on the decklid is not factory (GM or ASC) and the ASC sticker on the inside door was due to ASC's Convertible Conversion. My 1992 T/A Convertible has the same sticker along with a stamped month/year. I suspect this one might have had a stamped month/year as well, as most of the ASC Convertibles I've looked at have, but it may have rubbed off?

Re: ASC clarification

Scott got it. All 86-92 Factory/ASC Convertibles got the sticker. I actually met the guy that worked for ASC and put the sticker on them. Great Conversation.

Re: ASC clarification

I believe I'm correct in saying that all convertibles left the Van Nuys Pontiac plant as T-Top cars, and were trucked to Long Beach to ASC. The tops were removed, SIGNIFICANT structural enhancements were made to the car, as well as the convertible top installation, I believe ASC also had a US facility in Michigan.

ASC also did many many convertible tops for foreign car manufacturers; in fact, they originally did those prior to doing them for GM, and continued to do so until they went out of business, I believe in 2005.

Here are a few places to get a top:
You should probably anticipate between $500 and $750 to have it professionally installed.

Re: ASC clarification

Yes, all F-body ASC Convertibles were indeed T-top chassis cars which had their heads cut off. The T-top car was used for a couple of reasons, firstly the windshield header was already there, and it was simpler than removing the top from a hard top. Secondly T-top cars had a thicker floor-pan, and some other structural enhancements which may not be noticeable to the naked eye, and there are some changes to T-top cars which are noticeable, for example the door wedges. ASC had facilities in California (I assume Long Beach) and one in Livonia, MI, the Livonia plant also is where they made the GNX. ASC added a sub-frame connector, and they welded in another reinforcement under the threshold, they also added bracing behind the doors. They then cut the top off, folded it up and sent it to be recycled. For the "Factory" cars there were fiberglass covers for the T-tops and the rear Window which were reused. Cars which were Dealer ordered by ASC had the T-tops removed and the parts were sold, other people say they were scrapped.
