Absolutely. I've got some road racing and autocross experience, and I'd chose the 145hp 4spd car over the 165hp automatic car every day of the week and twice on Sunday for work on a road course... Drag racing might play out differently, but for road course use, a manual trans wins hands down in the era of car we are speaking of.
Chazman had an '83 CFI car that I swapped to a V6/I4 5-speed with the deeper 1st gear. The difference from auto to manual transformed the car. It went from laughably slow to spin the tires fun with only that one change.

Re: 3rd gens vs '82 Mustang GT
I had it for 8 years, did what I did with it and had fun, but it was time to move on and let it go. That German paid me my asking price without negotiation. I should have asked a little more for it .
If I had limitless space, I probably would have held on to both convertibles, though. But I guess, how many 'verts do you need? I got good money for both, so I should just be happy.

I agree with you 100%. 3rd-gens are just better than Fox-Bodies.

I absolutely love the 82 GT, it really should be credited as starting a performance war in the 80’s. My Favorite cars are the 3 rd Gen f body’s, Fox body Mustangs and C4 Corvettes. As far as a comparison, I’ve had a few Fox bodies and a few 3rd gen’s. I have a 92 LX 5.0 convertible Auto and 2.73 gears currently and a 87 Camaro convertible LG4/ Automatic and 2.73 gears. One would think the Mustang would be much quicker than the Camaro, on paper it should be. But, the Camaro feels much more powerful low end than the Mustang, top end the Mustangs 5.0’s power comes on, where the LG4 runs out of steam quick, I never actually raced the two, but I think it would be a close race. I did race the Mustang against my 95 Z28 and the Mustang got smoked pretty bad. I’ve driven some fast 5.0 Mustangs, like a 92 5.0 notchback 5 speed. Fords Slush box automatic really hurts the performance while the 700R is geared better. So which car do I like better? They both have good and bad points, they both are pretty reliable, the Mustang is more comfortable to drive, easier to get in, the seats are more comfortable. The gas mileage on the Camaro is very good with straight highway driving, I’ve gotten 29mpg ( I got 31 with my 91 RS L03 5 speed driving out west) the Mustang is about 23, 24. And I’ve owned the Mustang for 20 years and the A/C still blows cold

Re: 3rd gens vs '82 Mustang GT
I wasn't expecting to see this old thread up again.
That '82 was a pretty cool car, sometimes I regret selling it. As I probably mentioned, I bought it based on the memories of my test drive back in the day. Man, I thought that high 15 second car was hot back then. The tail even went sideways when I hit 2nd....wow! I couldn't wait for GM to certify the LU5 with the 4 speed.

I hate Fox-body Mustangs. I don't even know how a car like that could be called a "Mustang"...

Remove the air silencer, 4.10 gear, timing bump and good converter will put that LX in the 13s.

Re: 3rd gens vs '82 Mustang GT
Getting back to the SVO. I test drove one back in the day. I felt it was a step above the GT in interior appointments. Nice seats, leather covered steering wheel and shifter. Handled quite a bit better than other Foxes I'd driven. It sort of felt like a Mustang IROC-Z. The 2.3T was peppy and all, but all I thought afterwards was, "this would be the perfect Mustang if it had the 5.0".

They needed more power. Out of boost it was a low compression Pinto motor. Once it was in boost it made ok power, but then it was time to shift. Another 1000 rpm would have been good.
I’ve seen a couple that have been swapped with a modern Ecoboost. That would be fun. But like then everything else is faster.
