One thing that ironically hurts the prices with the 3rd gens is how well they were built.
In my opinion the reason the 2nd gens have soured quicker in value is two part. #1, of course is because all of us aging car guys just want to have the cars that were so cool when we first became interested in cars. That's an easy answer & the 3rd gens are no doubt finally entering that age.
But the ironic advantage the 2nd gens have had is they were just not made as well. They didn't hold up to the beatings & modifications & Most importantly the RUST! Today it is so hard to find a "rust free" 2nd generation camaro or Trans am. Original paint too? That's 10x more obscure & people are opening their wallet up to own one.
The 3rd gens were built so much better. Especially from a rust preventative perspective. So many times you see a heavy modded & ragged out 3rd gen camaro & yet its still often times very rust free & in pictures shows pretty dang well. Don't get me wrong, leave them outside & parked in the backyard & they will rust & rust bad. But take care of them even a little bit & they hold up pretty well.
I just think that this actually hurts the value a little because there are so many of them still out there that are really solid, We have been talking about our cars values for a decade now, & both the 2nd & 3rd gens continue to creep up in value over that time. They are climbing, but it's the low mileage, unmolested, with original paint 3rd gens that are seeing the biggest increase. It's just the nature of collecting. No point in collecting something that is in everyones garage
One last thought is over the years, people in general have more storage space to stash vehicles away. I grew up in a small house with a single stall garage. Seems as time goes on, garages & houses keep getting bigger in general. More places to stash cars away in the 90's than there was in the 70's or 80's That might be a bit of a deep thought, but I think there might be something to that too?

They are great cars. I had two of them for a number of years and want another one. I don't understand all the bashing people have for them, yet they drive cars from a similar era which don't perform as well. In the later C4 years, they go good, handle nice, and when they haven't been apart a million times they drive super nice. To me, the LT5 cars feel better than many modern cars and I want another some day.

Come out west some time. Go to any tacky dive bar on Karaoke Night, and count the leather Corvette jackets in the crowd. Look at a few of the cheeseballs wearing them and the vettes in the lot. Go to a car show or two and scope out the fossil with his thinning silver hair greased back with pomade. Check out his chromed and billet pasted vette with all the tacky slogans the vinyl shop could cut, applied all over the engine compartment. Oh ****! That "LT1" billet air filter cover is TIGHT! Did you see the chrome fuel rail covers? Just another time-out doll waiting to happen.

Re: $32,500 for a 100K mile IROC
I was almost not a 3rd gen guy, I was almost a C4 guy! In 1988, with my first professional job firmly in hand, I figured it was time to order a REAL car. I was making money, no wife, no kids, let's go for it!
I ordered a 1988 Z52 roadster. White, gray leather interior, white top, 4+3 stick and oh, those sooo beautiful and radical 17" wheels. I waited weeks for it. It was late Friday afternoon and the dealer called me to tell me it was in. I was at work and couldn't make it there in time and told them I'd be there Saturday.
That evening, I went to a cruise night which just happened to be across the street from the dealer. There was my car!!!! On a rotating platform in front of the dealership, bathed in flood lights. It looked magnificent! I tried telling everyone that was MY car right there, but people didn't quite understand that that was my actual car.
Anyway, next day I go with my friend to pick it up and I wanted to inspect it first. On the nose were about 35 large stone chips. No way was I accepting it like that. The dealer assured me the body shop could make it right and I came back a few days later. It looked worse!!!! Sanding marks everywhere and overspray. Now I was getting REALLY PISSED! They said they'd re-do it and I returned to find it looking EVEN worse. I was soooo pissed off, I told them to stick that car up their @$$ and refund my money.
The following year, I ordered my black IROC-Z.

No, it’s not the original color...according to the RPO sticker, the car was originally black. The previous owner went to a lot of trouble, though..the engine was removed, along with most of the other pieces that normally show a color change, and were also painted..it’s very difficult to find a spot on the car that was missed.
