I kid you not - A couple years after I bought my car I took it through a car wash and many of the decals came off! I replaced most but not the "gradient" strip along the ground affects. Just sayin' -

Hi all ,
New here and bumping this thread back to the top. Take a look at this car and tell me your opinions. Has the car been messed with or not? Owner says 100% OEM. never messed with in any way?? Is it a non IROC Z28? What about t\he rear bumper Tuned port emblem?
Have searched trying to find out but more confused than when I started looking, Thanks for any input

Under the hood it just looks used, but correct. Needs a serious detailing. Looks like it might not have the correct exhaust pipes in back, since they should be somewhat visible on an 87.
When a seller says things like "Only Production Year With Rear Brake Light In Hatch" I have to shake my head, since the third brake light was required from 86-up, and were always in the hatch... Even if he meant in the spoiler, 87-90 are that way. Just illustrates the owner is a bit of a bonehead, if the ghetto photo backgrounds weren't already a clue.
Overall I'd give it a B- or maybe a C+. The paint looks decent, and the bulk of the interior looks decent. It looks like it'd clean up decent, some emblems and decals, a few fairly easy to find parts, and the obvious issues would be solved. I wouldn't call it all original, maybe a "survivor" even thought with a thirdgen I'm not sure that means much with so many that were hermetically sealed the moment they pulled off the delivery truck. It doesn't look like a well kept 55k mile car, maybe 155k miles.
As far as collectibility, desirability, I'd still be in that B-/C+ range. It's a 5spd which every fun car should have a manual transmission, but it's a 305 which no car ever should have. It's an Iroc, but it's appliance white. T-tops are a good thing and a bad thing at the same time, but they probably add a little value. It's not an exceptionally HOT performer for a Thirdgen, 89-92 305 5spd/350 cars are a degree more exciting to drive.
So yeah, I'd go with "Meh..."

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
Looks like it could be a great driver or car to have fun with, but a pristine virgin it's not. I don't know why people want to mis-represent stuff like this. Just call the car what it is and be straight up, life works out better that way. Depending on how it looks and drives in person, it could be a $5-7k car pretty easily. But going for $10k when it's clearly not original just gives the seller and the car a bad name.

I am in ohio. The car meets budget. It's strictly a matter of value at this juncture and a LOT of lack of kowledge on my part. I Was searching the site trying to find out info on 87s because I wondered about the lack of stripes and decals and happened across this posting. I will PM you about your offer. Thank you

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
Funny, I was thinking $7k wouldn't be out of line. Assuming the paint is decent up close, that's a huge headache that would be avoided. We've all seen thirdgens like this that get a bit of detailing, some repro parts and a decal set, only to show up on ebay or BJ for a price twice what this one is going for...

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
Interesting car for sure. While I almost always question mileage claims, especially without good documentation, it would be pretty easy to tell if its been painted in person. A good friend of mine had an 88 Iroc back when it was new & one of the first things he did was peel off the stripes. So its possible, but odd that all are gone & the wheels are no doubt a darker shade of gray. A lot can happen in 30 years even if they aren't driven much
One thing that to me looks the part is the seats. Drivers seating surface looks pretty nice.
Cool car & Like Drew said, if its original paint it could be cleaned up & brought back to stock appearance easily 7K would be a good price. But as is 10K is too much. Would really like to see under side picts. But I am a Broken record with that request on lower mileage cars.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
Kinda weird that my estimate is high for a change. I guess I figure the terrible pics are making it look worse than it is, and that it'll clean up nice. We all KNOW that if one of those Ebay dealers picked this car up, they'd put $500 into tire shine and cheap black rattle can and it'd be listed for $15K for the next year.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
After 20 minutes of casually browsing the other Irocs on Hemmings, and Ebay, I'll double down on my estimate. Anything with similar mileage and options is generally a lot higher than $7k. Unless the pics are hiding some serious problems, even the $10K isn't terrible for the market.
But then I guess it doesnt have a swinging fuel pickup....

First off I REALLY appreciate all the help and the banter. But now I am heading back towards being confused, I am old OK, so it's my fault. With absolutely no intent of acting smarter than you all I amjust not finding these 7-8K cars that I can splash some touch up and wipe off with a cloth and have a nice undinked with IROC to call my own. Please post links to them, seriously. I have been searching all over for cars at all the known places and I have to tell you I am not finding them. What I am finding is what Drew just posted 15K and up. I am not pleading a case to buy this car, but 3rd gen in general. Are these sellers coming down to 10K from 15K??? or are none of them selling? or am I not looking in the right places? Or am I just too impatient? Educate me more please.

Run the VIN on the car see what options it has. Go look at the car or have someone inspect it. If it's in good mechanical shape low ball them. If you are looking for an original manual car those are the hardest ones to find. I just see a car that probably has been painted, with some details that are wrong, and really dirty. I don't understand all the harsh criticism of this car there has been a lot worse posted on here for more money.

Blech! Camaro Camaro Camaro interior always struck me as horribly tacky, even in the 90s when tacky was normal. Reminds me of my Mustang when it had Ford logos on the front, back, all 4 wheels, both door jams, the steering wheel, etc etc. They REALLY wanted you to remember who built the car.

Yes an original holds value to me over a modified car. I agree that resprays are pretty darn easy to detect in person. Just to answer a couple points brought up here the seller is adement that it is OEM paint. Like a guy would have to be a real horses rear to have a buyer drive 9 hours to see a respray that was claimed otherwise right? He is supposedly getting the fender dent bumped out and the cracked door moldings have been replaced. I told him to send close up picks when done. I am not leaning one way or the other on the car at this point, gathering itelligence.

Better pics would help a bunch. Ask him, if the paint is original, what was the reason that he removed the decals, emblems and door moldings.

The pics in the Hemmings listing are REALLY bad. They don't show much, the dreary cluttered backgrounds, bad lighting, and lack of focus really make the pics hard to look at, and they're definitely part of why the car looks dumpy.
A person needs to see the car in person and go over it with a fine toothed comb. It could be a diamond in the rough, or garbage, but you won't be able to tell without looking under the skirt and a test drive.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
I think Drew’s assessment up top pretty much nails it..
I have seen original, unmolested 70k-90k mile cars that were very well maintained and have cruise night trophies going for under $10k in New England.
There are cars that have original or show worthy repaint jobs with all emblems and decals correct and pretty mint original interiors with original paperwork, etc.. cars that have been driven but kept up really nice by people that really loved how IROCs were right from the factory.. all stock and detailed under the hood with maybe a flowmaster and tires..
I think the car may be worth $6k-ish but I’d rather pay $9k for a 5.7L 1989 that has been well kept and original..
You could do really well with a $10k budget..

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
The problem is there are far more overpriced cars of every make out there that make cars that are really for sale hard to find. What I mean by that is the driver quality cars you find in the upper teens are for sale eternally. We can all post links to those cars that are "for sale" But are just posted out there by the dreamers hoping for that one special buyer. The cars that are priced right, (and they do pop up) will usually sell in a day or two of their listing. Its also monkey see, monkey do. A guy sees other cars for sale in a quick search & figures thats the market & he will ask the same.
I was just talking to a friend about this a couple weeks ago. If Craigslist charged to run an add, (which I would not be apposed to) it would get rid of all these dreamers that are not really looking to sell their car. We would see far less cars for sale, & the ones that are for sale would have realistic prices so the advertising money spent would actually be effective. They would not keep throwing money week after week, month after month & many times years.
Remember when we had to run adds in the local newspaper? Pretty sure it was something like $20-$30 for 10 days & you would list on a friday to get the double weekends. Kinda miss those days sometimes.

I agree that far too many people base thier cars value on advertised prices vs selling prices. Problem for shoppers is that selling prices are for the most part not known and those prices that are put out can't be trusted either. Twice I have known people on both sides of a car transaction and the differance in what was supposedly recieved and supposedly paid amounted to thousands.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
I was looking for a very for a long time.. I saw prices up to $30k for a low mile all original Vert.. I waited and looked every day for a few years until I was ready to pull the trigger and you start to see the cars priced $18-30k will go years without selling.. sometimes you will see them lower the prices every 6 months until they sell..
I got my Vert for $5k under the asking price because It was for sale for a long time. Craigslist, EBay, Craigslist, consignment.. The price was too high. I was surprised he took my lowball offer, but it was a cash, let’s get this thing sold in the winter offer. It was a fair price and what I was willing to spend. I would have bought one with more miles for cheaper and let it be known..
That black 5.7 Z28 in Indianapolis looks sweet..
I have noticed that the listing prices have been going up since I bought. I’m tempted to jump on that blue 5.7 in New Hampshire as well.. $10k-11k would be a good deal if they’d take it.. The prices are creeping up a bit but good deals come up still..

Re: 1987 IROC-Z
Getting a Vert was a little challenging so I had to do it sight unseen and pay $800 for enclosed shipping. I had to get a ton of videos and I had a contract for the condition of the car. The guy was very confident about the condition of the car and it was well represented. I pretty much knew about every paint chip and issue. The car only needed exhaust and tires. There are only a handful of good verts for sale in the country at one time so I had to be prepared for shipping it in.
Your blue IROC is an awesome find! Congrats on that! I’d like to find a T-Top 5.7 some day. When you get specific about color/options/etc it can make the search take longer but it also makes it more obvious you need to pull the trigger when your car comes along..
