What year gauge cluster is this?

I recently picked this out of a U-Pull it and I was curious to know what year it came from? I noticed it was a 145MPH Speedo (cable driven) and if I'm not mistaking doesn't that make it worth somewhat more?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: What year gauge cluster is this?

Looks like an 85-89 Z28, IROCZ cluster to me. I don't know if all 5 years had a cable driven speedometer though.

Re: What year gauge cluster is this?

No 145's in 1985. Some cars, 86-89, had them. They were all cable driven in Camaros. While the 145's are more desirable, they don't typically sell for a bunch.

It came out of a late 1986-1989 low output 305 TPI car.

What typically made the 145's more desirable? Is it as simple as the MPH were higher?

Yes. For example, my 85 IROC was originally equipped with an 85 mph speedo. Frankly, that was embarrassing. I swapped it out for the 145 and the high redline tach.

Alright thanks for the answers, and could I get your opinion on how much it might be worth? I've done some research and I've seen some 145s go for $85 and some that go to $120+.

Yep, it all goes back to the myth that whatever the highest mph reading is on the speedo is the car's actual top speed. No one wants people (that believe the myth) to assume their car tops out at 85 mph when in actuality it's closer to 130-140 mph.

Re: What year gauge cluster is this?

Keep in mind that from the mid 70's thru 1985 it was mandatory to have a max of 85mph speedo... (It was from one of those stupid Progressive think tanks believing that it would reduce speeding by mandating car companies to max out speedometers at 85 MPH.) So cars from 1985 it would not be correct to have a 145 speedo...

Which drove some of us to see how far we could spin/push them past the 85 mark...

Re: What year gauge cluster is this?

That cluster came from a late 86 - 88 TPI Camaro. The lg4 & l03 cars didn't get the 145, and the 89s had the oil pressure gauge flush with the tach.

The problem is that the needel hits the trip odometer reset button at about 86mph.
