Were the t-top shades a dealer add-on accessory or were they shipped in the car from the factory as an option? If they were shipped from the factory, was there a rpo code for them?

 

These are questions i would like to know as well. i am guessing that if they are factory they did not have an RPO and just came with the t-tops as part of the package.

i found some in a 89 firebird that i parted out a few years back and hung on to them and i was wondering, if they are factory is this the original box they could have come in, it fits them perfectly

 

Were they in the box? It is a shame that the foam falls apart on those shades even if they are kept away in the box.

 

They were in that box in the back seat when i got the car, and yes i wish they were made with better padding material.

 

DE4 is the RPO for the sun shade option.

correct. if they came with your car it will be listed in your RPOs.

 

so i looked at the option list for 82-84 and cant find DE4, does anyone know what year they were first available?

 

cant say anything about firebirds as my 83 is a HT but my friends 85 Z had a plastic version of the sun shade.

 

Unfortunatly my iroc didnt come from the factory with DE4 rpo. Always wondered if my iroc had them or not but didnt know if there was a rpo for them. Closest rpo I have is DE1 which is the rear window louvers.

 

I will have to look at my RPO codes, My car came with the shades.

 

The TTop sun shades weren't an option on the Camaros. If you find a set for the Firebirds, they will work in your Camaro. I have a a few brand new in the box, never opened, from CoverCraft. They used to make them for the aftermarket using the correct GM headliner material. Unfortunately, I did take one out of the box and it was deteriorating also. I used it to have new ones made. They came in handy during the Hot Rod Power Tour when my AC decided not to work.

 

i thought it was an option on the camaros. you mean they werent avail unless someone got them from a bird?

 

Hey scott. Not wanting to start a war here but so far were are getting they are a factory option and not a factory option. I also did a search for the DE4 rpo and it comes out to say its t-top shades. Dont know what to believe. I've always like reading your posts and I know you know what your talking about. So if they are not an option from the factory, will you still have the DE4 rpo? If you dont have the rpo, were they just part of the t-top package or did you just buy them at your dealership as an accessory? I'm just curious if my iroc could of came with them because when I bought it, there was a few parts missing like the rear louvers and all accessory bracket braces since the previous owner(i'm the second owner) installed crap headers and exhaust system. Plus there was a few other things missing also but since then, I found all the parts needed to make everything correct. I can see the shades coming from the factory but being stuffed in the garage in the corner with the rear louvers and when the previous owner sold the car, he didnt put them back on or in the car.

 

what Scott said is most likely tru. remember, there were some options that came on the bird the camaro didnt get and vice versa.

 

They were an option for 3rd gens, Firebirds only. The Camaro did not receive the ttop sun shades to my knowledge. Unless someone can produce a window sticker from a Camaro that shows otherwise, I need to maintain my original thoughts that they were not available for the Camaro.

 

I'll back Scott on this one. I don't recall every seeing an option for shades on a 3rd gen Camaro (can't speak about Firebirds).

GM did eventually offer them as an option on 4th gens Camaros, but never on a third gen AFAIK.

 

My 89 formula 350 came with the shades from the factory.

 

If you look at the STRIM sheet I just posted about here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...rim-sheet.html you see the CC1 code for the t-tops AND DE4 for the sunshades, this is for a 89 TTA, and STRIM is the sheet used for the assembly line to stuff the car with the bits as shipped to the dealer for the dealer prep ... looking at the other codes on there you see wheel caps, wheel lock kit, wheel nut covers, front airdam etc.

So yes defenitly put in there @ the factory ... if they did the same for the Camaro I don't know.

 

It's already been said that these are factory options for the Firebird only.

 

yeah, my 86 bird had them but they werent with the car so i took the Velcro pieces off of the t-tops.

 

Sorry did not see any proof of that as the Window sticker for the TTA don't call them out only listed on the buildsheet ...

 

had mine reupholstered. the stitching is not factory correct but the headliner material is. looks really nice

 

It could be on the console RPO sticker also.

 

I had some made for 20-30 dollars and there great. I guess you could say mine came with shades later. So what is the correct RPO code? DE4 or DE1? What is DE4 and what is DE1?

 

Forgot about the SPI (RPO) sticker in the console and just double checked on mine (TTA) and yes it lists DE4 on there :-)

When my Dad purchased his 89 GTA new it did come with the shades direct from the factory. He did not purchase them as an add on. They had small velco tabs in the corners closest to the center support. Some time after I purchased the car from him the material became a big sagging bubble that rested on my head. So, I had to have them redone at a trim shop. They came out ok but not exactly the same as the original material. Recently however I purchased a set of black ones from covergrl "Princess" for my other GTA that did not have the shades in it when I purchased that car. I can testify that they are every bit as nice and just like the originals. I was really impressed with her work. They were reasonably priced and she completed them and shipped them within a few days of my order. She also had the velcro tabs on the shades she made. Although her velcro tabs are a little larger then the factory originals, they work great and look perfect in the car.

To be honest I prefer the shades in the T-tops. I like the way they look and in the Summer time you really do appreciate them. If I want to take the TTops off I do take them off but if they are in I have the shades in year round.

 

So the factory put velcro on the t tops for the shades? If so then mine actually did come with them, I have just a few of the velcro pieces on the t tops left

 

this keeps the shades from sliding over the T bar area even tho they slip into the T top trim by the latch.

 

Yes, There would be two small squares on each corner closest to the center support. The side next to the outside/handles did not have velcro.

 

wasn't there a company on here selling new T-Tops Shades ones that matched your interior color. i lost their email
