delco radio

Hi.
Please help me. I have a 1984 trans am, and want the radio stock looking.
I have a firebird ux1 radio from an 89 or 90. It has the orange lighting but the grey faceplate. It looks not good for me.
What should i do?
Im thinking of putting an camaro ux1 radio in.
Did the camaro have a white backlight?
I found a camaro radio but thats lights blue.
My only chance i think is to found a white lighting. Then i can it color up.
Or i found an original 1984 trans am radio.
Impotant for me is a black faceplate and an amber lighting.
Can anybody help me in this?
What should i do?
Thanks alot
martin

Re: delco radio

No pre-1990s two **** GM radio ever came with a White lcd display. I've seen green (or blue) and orange. I believe the 1982-84 radios were the only ones that had Black faceplates (in Firebirds at least). The faceplates went to gray (along with dash trim) in 1985.

Keep looking, you're bound to find an 82-84 radio eventually.

As he said, you need an 82-84 radio, but 83-84 will be more correct. If you want something with similar specs as your UX1 radio, you need to look for a UU6 radio...and those are getting hard to come by. I found mine on fiero.nl, from a Fiero obviously, but it's exactly the same. By the way, they're very easy to mod for an external player if you can solder and you have some wires, a 3.5 jack and a ON/ON switch. They sound very good with the proper speakers as well.

Remember there are some differences between the years :
- 82 : amber display, no EQ radios, some have chrome ***** and buttons AFAIK.
- 83 : full black, light green display, 83 DT500 have a red display UU6 radio (even harder to find)
- 84 : full black, grey power button, light green display only, rounded cassette buttons
What radio came with your car originally ?

Some Buick radios of the same years will look fine in an early 3rd gen Firebird, the faceplate is gloss black, the buttons are covered with brushed metal, and the backlight is white (that can be changed to red/orange easily though)

'83 UU6 from a DT500 :

'84 UU6, notice the slightly different cassette deck buttons and the grey power button :

Buick UU6, looks a bit goldish but it's not :

Fiero UU6 :

Re: delco radio

Hi Raptor!

Nice to hear from you.
I know you from the early third gen forum.
I came from austria. So i´m not so far away :-)
I think it was a radio without cassette.
The car was broken up in new your and the original radio was stolen.
This was 1987. Then the owner before me swaped a sony 1Din radio in.
But i want keep it original with cassette. (I have so much tapes at home:-)
I think i search for a UU6 Radio.
Maby i find one.
thanks alot
Martin

Re: delco radio

Hi Martin,

Yes I remember you from earlythirdgen.com ^^

Good luck in your search, it took me a year to find one in decent condition at a good price. Got it for $20, with mismatched ***** (barely visible and not very hard to find) and a bad belt (which is easy to replace). Works like a charm. I love those units, they looks stunning and fit so well to the interior.
