Re: L69 IROC's
That's a very rare car. Please do not drop a 'Vette Motor into it. Practically every bozo with a clapped out Third Gen has dropped a 'Vette Motor into it at some point, and has of course told the obligatory stories exaggerating how fast this endeavor actually made the car, how it outran the cops, how it went 205 MPH once, etc., etc., etc.
Restore it to stock. This is one which will probably be worth a decent amount once Third Gens start gaining some appreciation.

you guys are killing me. the more and more i see this the more and more i begin to think i need to restore it to factory..... not a problem except i have always seen this car as my hot rod.... now i'd have to let go of that and accept it being slow.....guess i have plenty of time to decide as i probably won't start restoring it for a few years.

Re: L69 IROC's
Glad I could be a part of talking sense into you No one, at least i'm not, is saying building a hot rod is bad. I just wouldn't do it with such a rare car. LG4 and L03 IROCs are much more common, and just as easy to build up. If you do decide to go that route, I'm sure you'll find plenty of takers for the L69.
i'm not an original owner by any means but have had my IROC long enough now that i was labeled as a M-u-l-l-e-t-head everywhere i went. always thought it was a shame how under-powered these motors were and how disrespected the cars were. i wanted to basically do it to bring respect back to the cars, but now with them becoming more rare, the negative connotations are fading quickly and they are quickly becoming respected on there own without any additional help.
Eddietheripper - Beautiful car man. A very nice example.

Re: L69 IROC's
There is a black one I have seen a few times at a local car show, never knew it was THAT rare...here's a couple pics.....very clean lower mile car. Pretty sure it's a 5 speed too, I'll look for it at the car show this year and try and get more pics/info.

Re: L69 IROC's
I guess you guys didn't understand that my car 1985 iroc z vin g, i found out that it just has a rebuilt 305, no wiring harness or enigne compartment heater box, it has american racing rims, and 4th gen seats, but it is rust free so it does have the poetential to be put back, but i have to see what they kept and took off of the l69 i would like to atleast keep the l69 parts to let someone else put thier car back to stock, mine is pretty far gone from its l69 roots, i also had a 84 l69 parts car earlier this year and when i ran the engine #'s i was so bummed out it was a 307, so i couldn't rebuild that engine to put in my car, that is why i thought about putting my 87 vette engine in it?

Don't own this one, nor do I know the guy who does, but it's an '89 IROC-Z with an L69 in it. Shame it's in such bad condition.
I'd kill for an '88-'90 IROC, my favorite year.

Re: L69 IROC's
I still have my 83 L69 I ordered from the factory, delivered late June 83. Being an young airman in the USAF I could only afford so much so I concentrated my order on the performance options like 4 wheel discs, HD cooling, no AC and posi.
Another option that was apparently deleted by the factory, in addition to the posi, was HD cooling. Soon after the order was put in I got a letter from GM stating the HD cooling was no longer available. The posi deletion was verbally communicated to me by the dealer.
I'm embarrassed to show pics as it looks horrible. The NM sun has killed the paint down to bare metal in some places. Mechanically, I've kept it in pretty good condition. Everything is still original, although not everything is working; AIR pump, various vacuum switches, etc.
I have the window sticker, three build sheets and all the paperwork. It has 260,000 miles. Still my daily driver. I've regasketed the engine twice, (It leaks like pig!) leaving the pistons in place to preserve the ring seal. The first time I did it at 150,000 miles the cylinders still showed the cross hatch pattern! I could still see some remnants the second time around.
Someday, it will be restored, but after I am done with other projects.

Re: L69 IROC's
I don't knowhowI missed this thread the last couple of months but somehow I did.
Anyway, here is my 1985 L69 IROC-Z. I have owned it for 17 years.
The car was originally trimmed with the gold wheels and decals but when I had it re-painted I decided to go with the dark charcoal.
The engine is original and as far as I know has not been out of the car.
The vin shows the "G" engine code.
The 5 speed is also original to the car and is still working almost as new.
The rear end is not original, It always bugged me that you could see those ugly brake drums through the 16" wheels so when I found a 9 bolt rear with pbs brakes at a swap meet I made the swap. rear gear was 3.73 open, now 3.27 limited slip.
Other changes that I have made include 145 mph speedometer, overhead console, 4th gen leather seats, hood blisters and a Grant leather trimmed steering wheel.
The only original parts that I didn't keep in storage are the rear end and drum brakes.
Everything else could be changed back to showroom original if I wanted to (or if some day the car becomes more valueable in that condidion) I have no intention of selling it so I modified it to my tastes.
It is a fun to drive car that gets plenty of comments. I put on a couple thousand miles every year. Current mileage is about 130K.

Love those early yellow IROCs!
I came "this" close to selling my 83 when my dealer showed me a picture of the new 85 IROCs that were coming out.

Thats a very nice car. Have you thought about installing 3.70's gears in your new 9bolt? Thats very close to the 3.73 gears that came with the L69/T-5/ in to original 10bolt style rear.

Re: L69 IROC's
This is a great thread. I also have one of the 1983 L69 cars. Obviously not an IROC, but part of the brotherhood. I like the idea of a registry. If we really want to step it up on these 3rd gen cars , documentation is the way to do it.
Here is an example of what the Boss 302 Mustang guys do. I know there are other cars that do this and there may be something better.
http://www.boss302.com/201112.jpg. My quick search on other cars was that there was not an online viewing of VIN numbers and peoples names. Seemed to be kept by the club. Some publish a book you have to buy.
I could envision a separate area of thirdgen.org to keep this. . I searched as Ithought this would have come up on other low running 3rd gens and really did not see anything.
Anyone else like this idea?

Re: L69 IROC's
As i was going thru this there was a question as to whether the early cars were faster /slower than the IROCs...I don't want to start anything, just passing on information....I think it comes down to driver skill. I have Car and Driver articles from the mid 80's. Don't say it ....I know...I don't get out much.
Here are the results....
June 1983 1983 L69
0-60 6.7 sec 1/4 mile 15.0@93 Top speed 134
October 84 1985 IROC L69
0-60 7.5 sec 1/4 mile 15.4 @90 Top speed 138

Most people think the IROC was the bad boy of the lot, and though granted in later years it was offered with the 350, it really was nothing more then a suspension, rim and tire, and appearance upgrade - and that's where a lot of peoples mis-conceptions of IROC's come from. i had a guy when i first bought mine that was supposedly a camaro expert that swore up and down my car was a fake, because "no IROC ever came carb'd...", "No IROC every came with a 305....", "No IROC ever came with a 5-speed....", "No IROC Came with 3.73 rear gears....", and " no IROC came with the decals above the clear coat, they were all under the clear-coat...." needless to say the guy was dead wrong on all counts, but it just shows that a lot of people think they were all high performance cars that rivaled the corvettes and blew the mustangs out of the water.
As am I.

Updated the list on page one - if I forgot, or left any one out let me know.
Doesn't look like it - tried figuring out what year/model it came out of as it does look familiar, but i can't place it.
HankL69 - Very Nice
69-er - no worries man. mine smokes like a Mexican taxi cab, is about 15 shades of black spray paint and primer, all the bushings have rotted, and the tires are flat. mine needs lots of love..... but i'll get to it eventually. i'll sell my Vert before I sell my IROC.

Re: L69 IROC's
Thanks for all the posts guys. I'm a big IROC fan (ha ha I have one) and I am learning a lot on this thread about the 1985 L69 IROC's. I had a couple of questions though.
How many L69 IROC's were made in 1985? I have seen more LB9 and LG4 1985 IROC's so I was wondering if the L69 was kind of a rare engine option. I know that for 1985 the L69 was only installed in the IROC's so that already restricted the number that were made compaired to the other engine choices that were available.
Also were there a lot of 1985 L69 IROC's with the Lear Siegler interior? I have seen more 1983-1984 Z28's with this style of interior than 1985 IROC's.

Re: L69 IROC's
I'm sorry I missed seeing this picture before. That is a great looking IROC! Still even has the Goodyear Gatorback tires! I wish the reproduction Gatorbacks were made in sizes that worked on Camaros too and not just the Mustang sizes. I'd be intrested in seeing them just so that my car would have a period correct factory look.

Re: L69 IROC's
l69 started in late 83 as a nw z28 engine and you could get it in anything up until about 87 except the sport coupe or rs/berlinetta so basically z28s and irocs could get it as opposed to the early cfi or the tpi engines later

Re: L69 IROC's
Thats cool. Thank you for keeping the headlight pockets black when you repainted your car too! I have seen so many Z28's and IROC's with new paint jobs and they don't paint those headlight pockets black.
I love how agressive the Z28's and IROC's look straight from the factory. The blacked out headlight pockets are part of the package for that agressive look.

Re: L69 IROC's
Take a look at this one just posted in the 4 sale section.
Hi
Needing money for daughter attending university so guaging interest in my 1985 camaro, purchased it to finish and use as summer car. Car sat stored for 10 years, no rust on body just both fenders have a little dings in them. Paint is original so needs good buffing. Had small hole in floor where foot rested(patched with metal and coatedwith rubber. It is a rare L69 camaro that comes with all options including 3.73 rear end gearing. car is all original except engine that has been replaced with a 1979 350 block with corvette camel hump heads, headers to3" exhaust, factory single muufler dual tips on drivers side. Runs and drives but will need a carb tuned ( runs a little rich). Asking $3500 o.b.o

I came across this website looking up information on the 1985 L69's.
The car is a nice low-mile (40,000) 1985 IROC thats black with gold trim and has the L69 engine option.
Some of the information from the site is as follows:
The new IROC-Z option was available on the Z28 and came with new 16x8 aluminum "IROC-Z" rims, P245/50VR-16 Z Rated Goodyear Gatorback tires, fog lights, new grill with CAMARO on front license plate panel, .5 inch lowered ride height, body colored valances, (ground effects) Delco-Bilstein rear gas shocks, special front struts, increased spring rates, special jounce bumpers, 5 degrees of caster in front wheel alignment, (up from 3.5 on Z28) 'WonderBar' front frame rail stiffener, special valving in the steering box for increased steering effort, larger rear stabilizer bar with stiffer bushings, IROC-Z exterior decals and interior "Z28 IROC-Z" dash badge, and a thinner two-color lower body stripe. 'Tuned Port Injection' (TPI) motors are introduced. The Corvette got a 350 version (L98) and the Camaro got a 305 version (LB9) available in the Z28 or IROC-Z. LB9 was available with automatic only. L69 H.O. 305 was only available in the IROC and only with 5 speed manual.
L69 production was restricted half-way (April 26, 1985) through the model year.
Only 2,497 1985 IROC Z's were built with this engine option.
Is the information in bold from the website accurate? I know when the L69 was introduced it was introduced as a mid-1983 model year option.
For 1984 the L69 wasn't under restriction and was available over the entire 1984 Z28 model year run.
For 1985 the L69 was restricted just to the IROC's but I never knew how low the L69 production was for that year. I also didn't know that the L69 was restricted half way through the 1985 model year.
For 1986 there were only 74 L69's produced. There is a 1986 Z28 dark red metallic with gold trim in a Camaro book that I have that has the L69. That car has also been discussed in another thread on here. I don't know if the L69 was available in both the Z28 and IROC for the 1986 model year or not.

How rare is this? A fully loaded 1985 L69 TA with just over 10,000 miles on the clock...

Re: L69 IROC's
Pretty cool - nice looking TA too.
Only thing I can think of is the hood. The TPI T/A's routed the intake differently (can't remember which side passenger or drive it went) than the Camaro's which came up over the upper radiator support. maybe it's the same reasoning/concept - just a theory no proof though.

Re: L69 IROC's
I see you are listing pre-IROC L69 cars. I sold my 89 RS last fall because I inherited an 83 L69. It has been stored for about 10 years in a garage because there was some kind of towing accident with it where my stepdad broke the rear springs and brake lines. Don't ask me how that happened, they have tried to explain it to me twice and I still shake my head. My stepdad was always kind of lost when it came to cars. I used to ride in this car as a teenager and I remember it being so much fun. I've been sending money out there and my cousin has been getting it roadworthy and prepped. Picking it up in about two weeks.
Here is the VIN.

Re: L69 IROC's
It does not have the console clock however from the factory I ordered it with the 240 kmh speedo. I did have them send me the original too which was the 140. PFFFT 140...who has the will power to not exceed that in these beauties(she now shows 15317 km's on the odo. Also put a stereo in it for driving pleasure but trust me everything original is in sealed bags for future purposes. I Will NEVER sell this car until the day I die, then its my sons. In response to your query here is the codes and more pics. crappy day outside (rain, hail) so she was tucked in the garage where she spends her winters. Thanks again

Re: L69 IROC's
Any idea when the later-model rear, that didn't exist yet in the 84 model year, and the aftermarket gears that never came in ANY 9-bolt from the factory, got swapped into your car?
Or, what difference it makes in a thread about IROCs, which your car ISN'T because those also DIDN'T EXIST YET in the 1984 model year, that your car has a swapped-in rear in it?
I'm gonna guess you haven't had the car for very long?
