'86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
We were discussing this a few months ago, where we were saying that the defacto rear gears on an '86 LB9 IROC was GU5 (3.23). Here's one with a GU2, (2.73). Also unusual I think, is that it has a posi and J65 4 wheek discs with that 2.73.
Plus, this is a beautiful low miles, IROC!

That's one Pipsqueak of an IROC. Weakest tuned port engine in history followed up with an auto and a 2.73 gear.
Pretty sad car when it's best feature is it's paint color.

Yeah Im not surprised about the weak underpinnings because I see the 1AY RPO, which means dealer ordered. All flash on the exterior for the front lot (or showroom floor) and all Sport Coupe underneath.
But it is in very nice shape. Imagine if that was an 85 L69 5-speed 3.73?

I thought in order to get the 3.27 in 1986 on the Camaro you had to opt for the G92... Same went for the Trans AM IIRC...

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
I think that it may have well been the opposite. It seems that on the '86 LB9 IROC, the 3.23 (GU5) may have been standard and you needed to order a 2.73 (GU2).

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
Not a camaro guy, so give me some insight... Please.
1) in 1986 was the Z28 (Non B4Z IROC) available with the LB9?
If so could it be possible that the IROC was standard with the GU5 with the GU2 option? and the Z28 standard with the GU2 (no gear option)?
2) If the GU2 was an option on the IROC/LB9, would there be an RPO be to delete it?

Apparently, on this '86, you could specify a GU2 2.73. There must be some sort of code on the SPID for that. Kind of a reverse G92????
Anyone know what GC5 or GC6 is?

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
I'm not privy to the other conversation, however according to the ever so popular White Book the G92 was an option, it states (Z28 only)... with that said, it also states other options as "Z28 only" that I know were on the IROC...

My hunch is that those mystery 'GC' codes might be illuminating if we could decifer them.

GA1 ~ GA9, GB1 ~ GB9, GC1 ~ GC9, GD1 ~ GD-9, GE1 ~ GE-9, GF1 ~ GF-9 GG1 thru GG6, GI2 ~ GI9, GJ5 ~ GJ9, GK0 ~ GK3, GK5 & GK6, were all "FLEET INCENTIVE" cars.

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
Here's my theory, and it's just a theory. This one is a dealer order. I wouldn't be surprised if GM gave incentives to dealers to order these cars with an "optional" 2.73 axle ratio in order to help CAFE numbers.

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
It is too bad that no one seems to have them for Camaros, but for the Firebirds there is the Dealer order sheet that gives some clues into how things were ordered and why... For example It would spell out G92 and how they were to be applied to a vehicle, and to when and how the cars came with which options standard.
To complicate things, for any given year there was 2 and I have seen as many as 4 versions of the order sheets as items became available, or were made unavailable due to some shortage. But it gives some clarity.

Re: '86 LB9 IROC with GU2....
I think it would make a perfect road trip car. The mpgs would be great and you wouldn't have to hear the engine screaming while running 80 mph on the interstate. My 92 has a 3.42 with its G80/G92 options and I would like to have a taller gear for the reason of mpgs on long trips.

Really can't have it both ways, gearing is either performance or cruising. Unless you have a T56.
If you want to get taller gears, I'm sure you won't have a problem finding someone that will swap rear ends with you.
