Torn on a 1988 GTA
I went to look at a GTA tonight, knowing before I got there that the motor would come without TPI/intake/TB etc. When I arrived, I could see that the front sheet metal has all been replaced and isn't aligned very well. The owner stated that it was wrecked at one point and that the "clip" was replaced. The core support is straight, as well as the fender braces. The headlights sit below the hood, I'm not sure if they're out of adjustment or installed improperly.
They had a strange story about the factory 305 being yanked and replaced with the current 350 which was a rebuild. They couldn't answer any questions about what the motor was out of, but the guy said he had some machining done because the intake wouldn't match the angle of the heads... They weren't Vortecs so I'm not so sure about that. They were not aluminum. I would like to look under the intake to see if its a roller or not.
The Cross Lace wheels were in great shape, with center caps, and brand new BF Goodrich rubber. Power everything. It has a split back bench as well as the factory retractable rear cargo area cover that still works. The original leather t-top bag is still mounted in the car. Overall the interior was in pretty good shape. The center console has some wavyness that looks strange. I didn't see a crack in the dash pad. The interior is gray, seats are great with no tears or damage to the plastics. Carpets aren't even too bad. The headliner looked like most t-top headliners I've seen after years of neglect. All glass was in great shape.
They're asking $850, I think I may offer $700. I began typing this kind of on the fence about it, the questionables about the engine are really the only thing I'm not too enthused about. I think I may have convinced myself that I'm going to go ahead and purchase it after seeing this all in print.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal, headlights probably just need adjusted. Pictures of the car would help

I was losing sunlight and I live in Western Washington, so typically it was beginning to sprinkle. I didn't pull my phone out to snap any photos. Floor pans were solid, rear discs were present... Too much good, I do think I'm going to go ahead with this one.

Go for it! Doesn't sound like anything that can't be fixed. I bought my 87 GTA for $700 and it previously sat for 7-8 years. After a new tank, injectors, etc. It purrs. Bought it from the original owner with all paper work and RPO sticker, original title. Best money I've spent in a awhile. Let us know how it turns out. Best of luck.

Right on hydrolic, I hope I'm as fortunate. I think I'm going to head back out there tomorrow and snag it.
You Trans Am/GTA junkies may have already known that some of those odd options I listed above were standard, I wasn't until I did some reading last night.

If its rust free $850 for a GTA seems like a no brainer to me. Hell I have more then that into my floor alone.

I paid $1000 for mine, not rust free either. If its a complete car in decent shape I would pay $800 all day

Re: Torn on a 1988 GTA
Well, I brought the GTA home tonight. We're working on purchasing our first home right now, so please excuse the apartment parking lot.
Now that I've seen it in the daylight, it is a bit rougher than I originally saw and the owner led me to believe. I still think it was worth what I paid for it. The carpets were wet in the back but the windows had been left cracked and they just pushed it outside. There is no rust in the floor pans.
I'm not sure what the motor is, and the passenger side block pad has been machined off, so without pulling a head that's anybody's guess.
I've cleaned out an entire trash bag worth of crap, it was fairly disgusting. The only place I haven't checked is under the rear seats, I'll get to that tomorrow. I collected $1.34 in change. The SPID sticker was in place and the VIN matches the car. It is indeed a Y84. It's got brand new BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tires.
The rear hatch lid is rusted pretty bad on the top and the spoiler is shot. It's still got the t-top bags and cargo shade, both are in excellent shape.
Anyhow, here are a few pictures of the car. It needs some love, I know.
Filthy interior, excluding my jacket. There are zero tears or worn areas in the upholstery. A few stains, but I think they can be cleaned. The headliner needs some help, big surprise there.
Wheels are in pretty good shape.
104k on the clock, steering wheel controls are present. The factory stereo was in the hatch and looks good, so I'm going to try to see if I can get that installed and functioning.
There was a pair of condoms in the center console, but fortunately that was as weird as it got while cleaning.

Looks like you did ok, friend. I've seen a LOT worse for that money. Congrats and welcome to GTA ownership!

Re: Torn on a 1988 GTA
Thank you! I've got an intake on the way right now to complete the motor so I can fire it up finally. Trying to get all of the engine wiring sorted out has been a mess, but its progressing nicely.

It's a project car for sure, but for the money you paid is well worth it. Hope the engine is ok once you get her together.

Re: Torn on a 1988 GTA
Looks like a lot of car for the money. Once you align the front end, get all of the white to match, and get rid of the white overspray in all the places it doesn't belong, it's going to look pretty good.
