Vehicle History Research. How?
I know most people are probably thinking Carfax when they read the title of this post. I was actually wondering how, if possible, you could research your vehicles history without carfax. I am on a limited budget and would like to see what resources are out there for little or no cost. I have no problem doing the footwork as I am guessing that's why carfax charges so much, because they do it all for you. Any thoughts or knowledge would be great. Thanks
Cheers,
Matt

In some states, you can do a title search, which leads you back through that car's history in that state.
Here in NC for example, if you can find a willing DMV clerk, they can tell you every time that car was registered. For the most part, they're willing to help. From there it's just leg work trying to find the people if they are still around. Privacy laws have affected that in some states however.
You would be amazed at the things that turn up on a car that is two or three owners removed that the people have from owning the car. Sometimes they will share a story or two about your car as well, which adds to the interest.

I have a CarFax membership and I'd be glad to run your VIN for you. I have 4 more left and already used my first on the GTA I picked up. Was quite useful. Let me know, no charge!

If your looking for where it was made, what options it has and when it was born you might be able to get that info from PHS(Pontiac Historical Services)but I'm not really sure if they do that year.I know they have a cutoff date but I don't know what year.If your looking for the general history(accident reports, etc) use Carfax.
