Re: good deal or not ??

In my honest opinion - It's a beautiful well maintained low mileage IROC... My problem with it, besides the rear window louvers, is that it's the 5.0/Auto Combo instead of the more desirable T-5 5 Speed; Over 20,000+ IROC's were made in 85... With that said, the price to me is a bit steep for technically what's there; Still an Amazing Example of a well maintained Third Gen, just the substance presented doesn't justify the high price - plenty of room for negotiation...

Of course, that's just my two cents

I agree concerning the louver, however, it can come off as easily as it went on. I also agree about the T-5, but unfortunately it wasn't offered with TPI in '85. The LG4 gave away 65 HP to the TPI, so I think the A4/TPI combo would be more desirable than the LG4/T-5 in this case. It's probably worth the asking price, but another year, '87 or later with TPI/T-5 might be worth a little more in the same condition. However, the 215 HP 5.0 in the '85 yielded the most HP 5.0 with A4 of any year.
Just my .02 cents worth.

Re: good deal or not ??

I watched that car, and felt he could've gotten more money if he simply would've had better photos!! Most of the photos are tiny, and show a total lack of detail. I'm willing to bet it would've been significantly into 5 digits with a better ad.

Also holding this particular car back was a lack of t-tops and power options. To me, most people prefer a more loaded car, and t-tops tend to bring more $$$.

I know if/when I was to sell one of my TAs on eBay, I think I could get better money for both of mine, even though they are TAs (worth less) and have more miles (worth less) simply because my ad would be 10x better than that.

An 85 with 18k miles in the condition I see, and with this engine/tranny combo, has the potential to be a $13k plus car. The problem with this car is the lack of AC, no TTops, manual windows, manual hatch, etc. It's definitely optioned weird. Power locks, but not windows. He says the car has rear window defrost, but that must be manual also since I don't see the switch.

Re: good deal or not ??

The color is great. I like the louvers but the lack of options in particular lack of A/C really drive down the value on this car. If the car sold for 9,500 I would say that is the correct price.

I personally would not have bought the car but it seemed about the right price and maybe even a little high due to the no options.

Every car is different so each transaction needs to be considered separately. What difference does it make if they got a good deal or not? What are you trying to compare it to? I'd say the person that bought the 86 paid about the right price. The 86 cars have the peanut cam so the performance is lacking. The car is low miles and well optioned, but the lack of performance in comparison to other years is a detriment. In this case, the car sold for a fair amount. The buyer and seller both did ok.

Re: good deal or not ??

You got some good things to point out: 1985 first year of the IROC, Blue color very nice, Low mileage, etc..

I say tops I would have paid is 8K. But what really matters is what the car is worth to you. And for what you paid I wouldn't say you got ripped or anything. It's a very cool car to own!

Re: good deal or not ??

I'd say the car in the OP was a plenty good deal, some people don't want all the options, and I'd say the color adds to the value since you really don't see many of the blue ones.

As for the '86, I'd say the price was right, since it is a castrated '86 with the salt in the wound of a third brake light--probably the least desirable thirdgen year.

I hear a lot of guys say this about the 86. Isn't the 87 LB9/A4 exactly the same?
