RPM GAUGES
Why do 86 Fire Bird & TAs LB9s all have different RPM gauges.I've read somewhere on here or a magazine that said you can tell if your car has the hotter cam if your rpm tach has the orange line at 5500 to 6000,but some members on here say the 86 TAs did not have the hotter cam.I'm not convinced that some 86s didn't have the cam.I seen GreekItalians 86 TAs rpm tach the orange line starts at 4500 and his tach goes to 6000.his car is all original 1owner and my tach the orange line starts at 5500 and it goes to 8000.My car is original and 1 owner also.2 LB9s with different rpm tachs.Could some 85 LB9s made it into the 86s I don't know.does anybody know.
Post some pics of your 86s rpm tachs and tell us what you have.
I'll post mine in a minute.

Re: RPM GAUGES
I've heard that 86 was the worst year for the LB9 (even worse than 85 somehow), and I want to say it was because of the cam. If the magazine you read was talking about '85s, then the redline might have changed for '86s.

Re: RPM GAUGES
Its because the 86 had the LG4 cam. Therefore the redline was higher on the 85 cars. Im guessing firebirds are the same.

Re: RPM GAUGES
Those are my gauges, I'll take a better pic of the tach later today. But Manta guy is right, my tach only goes up to 6000. But I did notice he has a diff rear than me. I have a 3.27 9 bolt borg warner posi, he has a 2.77 posi. Could that be a difference?

Re: RPM GAUGES
Here is the gauge; a better shot.
I also took a pic of my speedometer it goes up to 140 too. Shouldn't the higher rpm one go up to a higher speed? Maybe 160 for Mantaguys? I don't understand the significance of the higher rpm tach.

Re: RPM GAUGES
Hmm, My dad ordered it to what he wanted back in 86. Maybe your dealer put a special cam in there that was an option from the factory? Have you ever heard of an 86 1/2 trans am?

Re: RPM GAUGES
All 305 TPI (LB9) motors (1985-1992) came with one of two basic cam grinds. An easy way to identify the type of cam on an LB9 car is to look at the tach: the lesser cams have a yellow line at 4500 and red line at 5000; the hotter cams have a yellow line at 5000 and red line at 5500. See chart at end of chronology for more cam info.Found it!!!

That's awesome, pontiac still had it back then. Was it an option you had to choose or you just got it by luck?

Re: RPM GAUGES
I don't think is was an option, it could have been, but I don't see it on my RPO list or my window sticker.
I knew I had read that somewhere and that those gauges meant something. So their are some 86s out their with the factory hotter cams.

Re: RPM GAUGES
I really never timed it,but I can burn some rubber when I have to.
I have a rpo code WS1,I'm wondering if that is for the cam,WS1 is Performance Package, what is included in that package.

Re: RPM GAUGES
You should time it, probably in the high 4 sec ranges for 0-60. A lot of people are going to disagree with that, but if you know how to drive, and utilize the torque, you can get a basically stock third gen into the 5 sec range for a 0-60, but for you it's different because you have a hotter cam. But I heard that the hotter cam has more torque in the mid to upper range. The one thing that is strange is that you should have bigger rear
