89 RS Camaro Value
Hi, I have an 89 RS Camaro 2.8 V6, auto transmission. Garage Kept, Im the second owner of it. VERY nice car, great shape. Some rust on the quarter panels. 166k miles. Id like to sell it and get an IROC or at least a Camaro or Trans Am with a V8, preferrably a 350. What would be a fair asking price for it? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
I have the same car, no rust from Az, very clean. Really only need paint.
Two tone paint on it now. Has original 55 thousand. Honestly I wouldn't want to sell mine for less then $3500 but I know I could never get that being a V6. Unless some young kid really wants the car bad. Post up some picture's. Lets have a look at it.
You can go to my profile and see mine. Is there anything wrong with it at all?
Oh I want a Iroc too! Had one and sold it, never should have. So when you get one hold on to it

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
it has a few odds and ends like the right side of the instrument cluster doesnt work (tach, oil pressure, amps), the quarter panels are rusted at the wheel wells, the hood and hatch need new pistons and thats pretty much it. how do i post a picture? do i need to have it on a url? im new to this so im still figuring it out! from 20ft away the car looks perfect. i work at a chevy dealer and the 3rd gen camaros rarely come in the last one being 2 years ago (a 92 rs v8 with t-tops, 125k, $1000 - i still kick myself for passing that one up!) so when i saw this one i had to have it!

Ok type in exactly this before the picture [img] then after picture [/img]
Then your picture will show. If you have photo bucket it will add the code for you.
Would love to see it!

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
Based on what you are saying, the car might be an $800-$1000 car. Not trying to bring down the value on our cars, but with electronic issues, rust and a V6 with high mileage, you might be lucky to even get that.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
[img]101_0672[/img] i hope that works! according to NADA guides i believe it says its worth around 1200 i think if i remember correctly. i thought about dropping a v8 into it but by the time its done it would probably be cheaper to just find a v8 car. i could always - i cant believe im saying this - part it out cause i think i could bring a little more and i need some parts for my trans am but its such a fun car even with the v6 to drive!

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
Just do a v8 swap. If it's that nice of a car, it might be worth doing it. And since you already have the car.
My 89 RS v6 had the nicest interior out of the 5 that i've had. It was a 5spd. absolutely straight body, no dents no rust. only got 750 for that one. I should have just thrown a damn 350 in the thing.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
I got $1,500 out of my V6 91 Firebird... It needed paint, and it had high miles, but everything worked and it drove like a new car. Did I mention it had about $1,500 worth of stereo equipment too? I gave it away because I was sick of looking at it after trying to sell it for 4 years. A really nice V6 without some serious extras is lucky to sell for $1,000. Without a V8 they aren't a performance car, they aren't really a classic, they're just an old car that sorta looks fast. Any money invested in a V6 is just throwing money away.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
Sorry to say that it's probably worth around $800, maybe less. Plus it's going to be hard to sell it, cause no one wants it. Get the electonics and guages working and you might be able to get a grand for it. But no more. Perfectly running, it's still a high mileage V6 Camaro, the least desirable thirdgen. The V6 Fire Birds are even more desirable than these. Sorry mate. Best of luck to yah.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
I wouldn't go that far. Lets be real you guys might have a fast motor, but come on almost all the body's look the same. LOL Look at it this way, go through the classifieds and check out the average used car price, if you find something for a grand and are able to drive it home you got really lucky. So here is a classic car that runs and looks good, he might be able to get $1500 or more, depending on the market where he lives. I sold a 90 honda accord with 260 thousand on it a few months back for $1750. I wish you the best, put it in your local CL and see how it goes. I noticed your picture didn't work. Photo bucket works good for coping and posting here.

A car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Could be $800, could be $8000.

high mileage
Pros:
"Very nice"
Rusty quarter panels and "very nice" aren't really compatible with each other.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
hard to give a value without some seriously detailed pictures. so far, we have none
442, get a photobucket account, load your pictures, and link to the album, or paste the pictures here using the IMG tag
I've seen v6 cars sell for over $2000, but they better be seriously nice, and have working AC. I would pay $3000 for a nice low mileage V6 car that hasn't been hacked up and modded. It kills me to see how many V6 cars have been gutted, made into rollers with the thought of making them into V8 cars, and then abandoned. Almost as bad is somebody who guts them to make a V8, then realizes they can't drive or sell them because of emission standards.
There are people out there that appreciate the V6 cars, I wish people would either drive them as is, or sell them to somebody that will

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
i found a 350 tune port for $600 engine and trans and all the wires and stuff for it. it was out of an 89 GTA Trans Am that had 140k miles on it. Is it worth it? how hard would it be to switch them?

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
that's not a bad price... IF you know the engine is good. do you're getting the wiring harness too? what about the computer? what about all the bolt on stuff? AC compressor, water pump, power steering with hoses, air pump? you'll need a new radiator, and maybe dual fans, and you'll also need a transmission, your v6 tranny wont work
you'll also want the V8 springs to compensate for the weight
and a V8 tachometer

ill try to get more pictures tomorrow. the rust seems saveable the guy sanded it a little bit then painted it so i dont know if it can be ground down and bondoed or something or if its best to just put a quarter in (its still a v6 tho!) im planning on heading to the junk yard tomorrow to get an instrument cluster and a dash if theyre open after im done at work.

if it's just surface rust, that's easy. it's when it goes all the way through that it's a problem

from what I can see, it is a nice car. I'd like to see pics of the interior
I stand by my statement that I wish you would leave it as a V6 instead of jacking with a V8 swap. Too many things can go wrong unless you have real skill working with engines, or very deep pockets to pay somebody else to fix what's wrong

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
yea i did a little reasearch and it seems like its gonna cost a pretty penny and i would hate to ruin a good camaro by messing something up. it runs great even with the v6 and gets 25+ mpg on average. the only reason i would want to get rid of it or switch it is just value wise, because a v8 camaro is gonna be worth a lot more than a v6 now and down the road. i also just like big motors in muscle cars tho

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
I'll disagree with you to some degree...
a TPI, factory looking install will be worth more. if you can make your car into some sort of B4C clone, with a TPI and AC, then yes I agree with you
or, if you put a LSx in it, it will be worth more than the V6, duh. No argument there
BUT.... you can spent $5000 on a LSx swap easy, and I'm not sure it increases the value of your car to $7000 (assuming it's worth $2000 now)
If you must have a V8, that's why I say Sell your car for $2000, then spen $4000 on a really really nice IROC or Z28 with a TPI. you've spent $2000 more, and you have a car that has ACTUAL collectors value, because it hasn't been jacked up
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't be one of those guys that drops a carb 350 in a beautiful car. You might like it, but if you ever plan on selling it, you are reducing the resale value. People like original cars, especially if they live in an area that does emission testing..

BTW, an RS with a TPI will never match the price of a Z28 or an IROC with a TPI. the value will be somewhere in between a RS with a TBI and the IROC

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
If you list that car on Craigslist for $2,000, you're going to be bumping that ad for a couple years, and replying to tire kickers/low ball offers, while you sit on the car. The response won't get much better until you ask under $1,000. At that price, you'd be giving it away, but hey, that's a V6 thirdgen for you.
The problem with performing a V8 swap, and expecting it to increase the value, is that most people don't do the job right. Virtually all of the mechanical parts of the car are different on a V8 from the V6. Even under perfect conditions, if you swapped EVERYTHING from a high end thirdgen donor car, and made it look like it came in the car, it'd still be JUST a clone. A clone, when the real thing, might be worth $3,000 in the same condition. If the donor engine needs rebuilt, budget about $1,000. Plan on spending another $1,000 if the transmission needs a rebuild. You can see how pretty quickly, even at bargain basement prices, you're going to spend more swapping the car than it'll be worth when you're finished.
Just drive the car and enjoy it for what it is, or sell it to someone who will. There are swapped cars all over, and they're not much better then parts cars.

Re: 89 RS Camaro Value
totally disagree with drew in his first paragraph... but not the second or third
I'm shopping for another v6 third gen right now. If I see one come up on CL that is clean and has AC, and is less than $2000, it's usually gone by the time I get to contact the guy.
I don't own two right now because I can't FIND another one. I have the money, I can't find the car. If the inside of his car looks as good as the outside, and it runs and drives fine, and the AC works, then I would give $2K for it in a heartbeat
I'll qualify that by saying I would give and and all rust issues a VERY VERY close look. my offer could go down quite a bit upon inspection

yea its the original paint. it was garage kept and i got it from the dealer when the original owner traded it in on i believe a cruze or something like that.
and 58mark, my plan was to sell this and a 53 chevy 210 that i have and put the money towards an iroc or z28. the inside of the car is good aside of the dash at one corner, but i have a mint dash that i may put into it if i dont need it for the trans am i picked up today. the a/c works fine. i think the rust is savable no doubt but i havnt really looked at it too close.

sounds like a good car, good luck with the sale. I assume you are somewhere up north because you talked about snow, so I'm probably not a buyer because of geography. it's a shame, sounds like a car I would be interested in
