I need some rear end (no pun intended)

As the title of this page has likely got you reading this, you may be expecting spam.

Sorry, but the real deal is that over the years, my father and I have replaced everything functionally on my 89 V6 accept for the rear end. It has always made an annoying whining noise and seemed unstable (compared to their mint 92 V6). I wanted some suggestions from you guys:

-Where to buy a new one? or...
-If rebuilding it would be just as logical?
-How much this usually costs?
-What businesses do this sort of work?
-How were your experiences when you had to do this?

Thanks for any feedback!

Re: I need some rear end (no pun intended)

A lot of small time mechanics are terrified of axle work. A bunch more think they can do it but have no idea what it actually entails. To get a professional to rebuild a rear is usually EXPENSIVE.

Depending on how bad the noise is, and how long you've already lived with it, I'd probably leave it alone. 2nd option would be finding a junkyard donor with the same engine/transmission your car has and salvage the rear. Resist the urge to swap to disc brakes, most thirdgens came with 2 series gears, and iron caliper rear discs that don't stop for $4!t. The ebrake cables, 4 wheel disc proportioning valve, etc all just add complexity. Usually V6 cars don't have enough power to hurt the rear, so a good used rear should be easy to find. Try www.car-part.com to find a donor near you and compare prices.

Maybe one of the mods will move this to the Transmissions and drivetrains board, you'll get more answers there.

Whining means the gears are most likely shot, as for being unstable, Idk what you mean by that without more details. But I will agree that it will be cheaper to find a used JY one and through it on yourself if possible, you can usually find them for $100-250, depending on gearing and whether its a posi or not. And lastly, I would not attempt it myself or pay any non specialist or at least a tech with a degree to do it.
