1989 GTA sold on Barratt Jackson Auction
I was watching the Barratt Jackson auction on TV today and up pops a flame red 1989 GTA... The announcer said the GTA only came with the 5.7 engine and no GTAs came with a manual transmission... No cigar there.
It was clean and they didn't say the mileage.. It went for $6500.00 Here's a shot of my TV screen....

sounds about right depending on the milage....these cars are everywhere. not rare at all, and not worth a heap of money, even in pristine condition.

Edit:
Here's the details on it:

Looks like it was either high-mileage or good luck that caused $6500. Can't find any mileage listing. Car looks immaculate in the pictures, though, so it's either low mileage or mildly restored.

Re: 1989 GTA sold on Barratt Jackson Auction
According to Auto check it is a CA car and had 103,647 miles on 3/29/2010. Nothing negative on the report and says there were three owners.

If that Auto Check data is correct (I have no reason to believe it's not) then $6,500 seems a bit steep for a 3 owner, >100K mile Trans Am, even if it is a GTA. Besides the sway bars, there is evidence of minor mods (check out the aftermarket radio), so you're not even talking about an unmolested, all original, bone stock car. I thought only the best of the best made it to Barrett-Jackson's auction, especially on TV.

I thought it was a bit high in price as well. I only saw one GTA on their site and used that VIN to run the check. Maybe the new owner has never priced third gen's before.

Hell everyone calls me crazy when I tell them my car is probably about 5500 dollars. These cars just do not bring money, if your building one for an investment, maybe not the best choice. I have 5500 alone in paint.

The side panel of the radio area is peeled away.
I see no armrest. And the bird on the driver's side behind the door is missing.

I'm surprised people value these cars so low... go to Barrett Jackson's website and search 1982 to 1992 Camaros. You'll see prices from 8k to 59k for everything from high mileage cars in good condition to low-mile, rare-option survivors. I didn't do the same search for Pontiacs so maybe the Firebird appreciation isn't that strong.

Presentation is important. Missing armrest, peeled radio/hvac pod can really distract from the appearance. The steering wheel looks to be in great condition, which typically wears and degrades.

Re: 1989 GTA sold on Barratt Jackson Auction
Thanks guys, The plastics on these cars suck. we wrestled sanded and broke alot of parts, and finally ended up with a comprimise. Ther is a layer of candy and severaly layers of clear and the body was 3m epoxied befor painting. Lesson here is the contrasting epoxy makes rock chips stand out big time! As far as keeping it up. It is usually garaged, and I use the Mothers cleaning product on it. The FX stuff is good keeps it bright

Re: 1989 GTA sold on Barratt Jackson Auction
Thats the BAD or SAD thing about the 89 GTA's is 8,081 built that year (3rd highest # for GTA's). Not like 92 with I think like 501 or 502 built. I have an 89 GTA 5.7, t-tops and I am going to have fun with it starting in a year or so. It will never be worth what i put in it but thats not going to stop me. But $6500 for a Cali car that i would almost bet didn't have rust for some would be a great starting point for there next project.
