Where can i find an oem replacement for the rear spoiler? The horrible new york winter cracked it.Thanks

 

You are probably not going to find that exact spoiler, unless its already cracked or offensively expensive. Best bet is to get one of the fiberglass aftermarket ones. Hawks sells them, among others I'm sure.

 

i actually have one, the only thing wrong with it is one points is missing 1" off of the tip Otherwise its perfect.

I would say go to hawksthirdgenparts.com or one of the sponsors and buy a fiberglas one, there much better IMHO.

With my 86, I'm planning to buy a fiberglass replacement, and talk to a body shop about finishing it in a satin texture paint...close enough, I guess...

 

where did it crack,if split on the side might be able to repair it.I repaired mine,had no choice because your not going to find the OEM .

 

I'm trying to keep it OEM. I know i wont be able to find an original. The cracks just started because of the horrible NY winter we are having. It started right next to where it slips on to the metal. I went to clean the vynyl and it cracked. Also it was garaged for 24 yrs but was left for 13 without my father using it. The bottoms that connect to the trunk split from old age. How did you repair it?

Mine split at the right hand upper edge along the side,I used 3M weather strip adhesive,took the wing off the car and put it in the basement to keep it warm,then I used 3M weather strip &gasket adhesive,cleaned out the dirt first,put some 3M in the crack and clamped it down,let it dry overnight then I put some more in and let it dry,this took a couple days to finish,the 3M is black and you can't even tell it was repaired.

 

Forgive me for my naive comments but how do you take the spoiler off the car? and how well does the m3 hold up?

 

They crack because the steel inside the spoiler rusts and expands. If it cracks and you repair it, its just a matter of time before it happens again. The bottoms of the spoilers have plenty of exposed steel to start rusting away brand new, that is how it all starts.

Is there a way to prevent that? I'm going to try everything possible to stop that. I'm going to try and see if someone can make me a oem replacement custom ordered. Probably going to cost through the roof but, If I run out of options i'll get the fiberglass wrap around. I hate to put parts that don't belong on the car.

 

Hay Greek,raise the hatch and remove the rubber plugs and you'll see the bolts that secures the spoiler to the hatch,remove them and push up forward and lift it off,your probably going to break the clips that holds down the wraparound,so your going to need new clips,their hard to find,go to a GM dealer and ask for a list of dealers who have some in stock.Actually I have the list so if you need it let me know.
And the 3M is like concrete when it dries,you have to keep building it up in stages,it's going to take time,It took me maybe a week between doing other things to the car.
When you get the wing off their also is a rubber gasket that go's on the wing at where the bolts go,maybe that's bad on your car and caused the deterioration,you'll have to replace that too.
The 3M product is no.08008.

 

Mad max,your right,but it can be all cleaned out and built back up with the 3M I mentioned,It takes time but it can be done,just be patient.

 

Do you have pics Mantaguy of the crack before and after? I have a red car, I would do that but be afraid of pressing it together to seal, and have the paint all around it start cracking and spiderwebbing. Or maybe I just don't fully understand how you did it.

Bigwhite,I don't know how to do pictures on the web.The 86 is not painted it's just a big hunk of rubber,yours has paint,I mean if you want to repaint yours you could.That's why I suggested to Greek because he has a 86.

 

I can't do it right now because of the mass snow storms we've been having here in NY. But, as soon as it stops i'll do it. It was garaged but not in a heated one. So probably the gasket went and hopefully the bolts aren't rusted underneath. If they are should i sand them down? I'm going to need the list in a week or 2. Where do i order the 3M from, any auto parts store? Sorry for all the questions. And the vid in my sig?

When it's wet the cracks disappear but when it dries they come back

 

The 3M will fix that,but you have to get it off the car and get it inside where it's warm.
If that's not your primary vehicle now is the time to do that,and order your clips before their gone.your going to need 6 clips and according to my list their is only 63 left in the whole country,less mine.

The dealer that I bought mine from faxed me a credit card authorization sheet,I filled it out and faxed it back,took about a week for UPS to deliver,they gave me a tracking no.
so I could see where they were.
The part no.is 20556524 they were 4.95ea.you need six.

Good luck with that spoiler. I've had my TA 21 years and have seen a lot of them. I've yet to see a car that was driven with a spoiler that was in good shape. The only exception was when my car was three years old. It was all downhill since then. When i do my car over i will be getting the fiberglass one. Been there, not going back. If you do these fixes that they are talking about it will just be a bandaid. Just my two cents.

 

But it's an original part of the car and the bandaid might last until someone comes up with a restoration technique that totally restores the wing.

 

He can just buy the good looking and durible fiberglass spoiler and put the crappy factory one in the garage. That way one day if his car ever has to have all orignal parts for a show or sells it it might have at least a shot of looking half decent. Why do all that work on it to only happen again. If he still daily drives it in the north east winter with the original it will look like crap in no time.

 

Actually my father told me that if i got a seamstress i could repair the vynyl/rubber spoiler. Just need to find the right material. I'm contacting girls that i know to see if it can be done. I was thinking about this for days now. Both of you are right. I can fix it like manta said, store it like 90rare said and replace it with a fiberglass one that wont rot. So, when I go to car shows or go to classic car meets i'll have the original spoiler. BTW I can take the bus and train to work and college so, I rarely bring my car out unless it's weekend or car meets. I'm very particular when it comes to parking my car on the street. I usually will just leave it in my car port and take the bus. I'm still going to order the clips and repair it. I hate to see it get destroyed in the weather. Hopefully after college my parents and I will move to somewhere warm with a garage. The snow is destroying my car... I will call those people on monday and order the clips and I will do the research on the seamstresses and let you guys know if it can be done.

 

Okay,well i talked to the seamstress and she said she could do it but it would cost a lot and she's not sure it would look right. She said to try an auto upholstery store if you want a prof look and restoration.

 

with the effort and money your about to put into reparing your orig wing, you will be at or above cost of the glass version. i can understand keeping it orig and commend you for this but the glass version is the way to go.

i bought one and will be installing it soon. its easier on the struts and looks just like the factory piece.

 

Does it affect drag coefficient in anyway? Or rear end behavior?(Fiberglass one) I'll probably take the rubber one off and store it away and when necessary repair it and only for serious car shows put it back on.

 

i dont think it would affect things at all but hten again for our wings to actually make that sort of difference, we would need to be going much faster on a regular basis for us to notice.

now granted a wing can make a difference even though your not doing 180, its a matter of pitch.

i'll be willin to bet that after you get the glass version on and see how nice it is, you'll not bother with swapping wings and leave the glas unit on full time.

 

I know that a spoiler affects the stability of speed in the car at the expense of ultimate top speed. But, isn't the fiberglass one lighter than the rubber one? Will the glass one lower the top speed or raise it? Also, did you order from someplace other than hawks? Sorry for all the questions i'm a amateur when it comes to this car.

 

our wing is mostly looks and low function, like i said, in order for it to actually be useful at its current pitch we would need to see faster speeds on a reg basis vs what we do normally. for the past year or so my car hasnt had a wing and the only diff i can tell you is i dont see it when i look in the rear view. i just havent sat down to mount the one i have put away.

as for lighter, heck yes the glass wing is lighter!!!! why GM went with the rubber version i'll never know. ya notice the 91-92 guys dont have this issue to deal with. the glass wing will drop nearly 25-30 lb from the rear of your car.

and to andswer your ques, currently HAWKS is the only place i know to get one unless you find one for sale on ebay or the classifieds.

as for asking ques, no sweat, we all had to learn some how.

 

not to revive a dead thread but does anyone still know where to get clips, they broke off my spoiler and i need them if im going to replace it.

Those clips are also avalible from the aftermarket. Waaay cheaper.

Wear did you find these aftermarket,I looked all over the place to find these and they are really hard to find.

 

I had the part number and everything saved in a spot so I would remember it and I cant find it!! Im getting OLD !! I'll keep diging
