Correct Stripe/Decal Package?
I recently purchased a very nice 1988 IROC, and I am planning on having a few things touched up over winter. The car has a few stone chips in the front end that I am going to have repaired, and it seems to have '87 and down style silver/black stripes on it. While discussing the options for the nose stripe decals (weather to try to save the ones on the car or not) we found that they might not be the correct style stripes for the car. My car was repainted by a factory dealership in 1990 under warranty for peeling clear coat, and they were replaced at that time. The RPO codes are -
81A: Stripe Color, Accent, Two Tone, Red/Black
D88: Decal, Stripe, Sport
Does the D88 code mean they should be the '87 and earlier style but in red/black? Or should they be the '88-'90 style with the red and black seperated by body color? I do know that the door decals need to move to the rear of the door. Any help would be appreciated, it is a low milage car and I want it to be as close to factory original as possible. Here are a couple pictures of it as it sits....

Re: Correct Stripe/Decal Package?
You need to be careful when looking online for RPO Codes. GM reused many codes over the years and unless it's specific to your year, you could get incorrect info. The stripes on your car are correct. RPO 89A represents the red/black strip in 1988. It was also supposed to be available only on cars with red interior. Not saying that information is 100% correct and no variations were allowed, but according to the order sheet, the silver/black stripe was the primary stripe on gray cars with gray interiors. I don't show an option for the blue/black stripe that was also available on the gray cars, even though we know they exist.
All you need to do is order the new front stripes and get new door decals for the back of the door. The dealer just installed them where the original owner wanted them or made a mistake since it was the first year for the back of the door. The rest is good.

Ok, I just dug up an RPO code list sent to me from GM that includes the codes used in the 80s. The 81A RPO code denotes the Blue/Black stripe. You will now need to order the full set. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Correct Stripe/Decal Package?
Thanks for the info. Would they still be the older style black on blue with no gap, or the newer style black/body color/blue then? I want to be 100% positive on what to do, so any input is great. I am going to try to contact the original owner tonight also.

This is what you want . . .
http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/gm/8890iz.htm
. . . colour code blue.
Your '88 is black over blue with gap. IROCZ door decal towards the back of the door.
PS; The IROCZ stripes are kind'a like the wheels . . .
- <='87 it was a two colour single stripe just like the wheel has a single stripe.
- >='88 it was a two colour double stripe (the gap) just like the wheel had a double stripe.
