1987 20th Anny. IROC Camaro
I figured this was the spot to post this considering what I'm about to say is regarding history. There is a car on Craigslist for sale. It's a 1987 IROC 20th Anny. car. The owners of the car say it has 50k miles on it & well, they want $40,000 for it! What do you guys think of this? Is a car like this worth so much, even if they only made 600 of these? Personally I love older cars & the history of them & rebuilding them but $40k is much for this kind of car.

He wants 40K, well good for him. I want a lot of things but I don't get them. First NO such car as 87IROC-Z28 with 20th anv, package and the production numbers who knows, that years model convertible was done by a outside GM source. Again for that amount it should be a ground up restoreration car. Just my opinion, just look and don;t buy.

Re: 1987 20th Anny. IROC Camaro
The pictures are small and hard to see, but it doesn't look like there's anything special about the car. As DPJ87Z28 pointed out, there was no factory-built "20th Anniversary" Camaro. If the car has any special badging or striping to that effect, it was dealer- or owner-installed.
A clean IROC convertible with 50,000 miles might be worth 1/4 of what he is asking.
$40K will buy you much more car than this. Heck, if you like older cars you could get a very nicely restored '60s muscle car for that money.

The other thread says it pretty well, but to clarify... Yes 1987 Camaro convertibles are considered 20th anniversary editions. Some have a Firebird style map pocket on the dash that says so. Others have a badge. As far as rare, well yeah, they didn't build a lot of them. But where do you draw the 'rare' line? 600 is enough that 'Rare' might not be the term I'd choose, but it's low enough that you don't see one everyday.
$40,000? Someone doesn't want to sell a car.

Doesn't the fact that you missed it show the potential rarity? The guy is asking way too much just to see if he can get it. That's all there is to it. All 1987 convertibles are 20th Anniversary editions. His 600 number is an unknown. There were 744 Z28 convertibles in 1987. The majority of those Z28s were IROC-Z verts so the rare ones are the base Z28 convertibles. The Special Edition verts were dealer ordered cars and did not come with a 3 in the VIN to designate the vert. This car is obviously one of the 744 factory verts for 1987. Not worth $40k unless somebody pays that for it!

I think you got your last line messed up, this car wouldn't be worth $40k even if somebody paid that for it, is what you should have said!!
Just because someone pays a certain dollar amount for an item, doesn't make it worth that dollar amount!!
Maybe the seller is just testing the waters so to speak, and doesn't really want to sell it, unless he gets a whole lot of money, hence the "absurd" price of $40k

No, the last line is not messed up. Why are Buick Grand Nationals worth so much? Because people are willing to pay it. That's what drives the prices, demand and what someone will pay. If someone pays this guy $40k, then that car is worth the $40k and all 87 factory verts value just increased.
After a Barret-Jackson sale a few years ago, I got a phone call from my insurance company suggesting that I increase the replacement value of my car. They stated the sale price of that car was higher than the books showed and represent what someone is willing to pay for similar cars.
So, as I said, if someone pays this guy $40k, then that car is worth $40k. If he then tries to resell it and can only get $15k, then the owner learns that his car is only 15K to the next owner. It's worth is what someone is willing to pay.

If its a Factory convertible, 1987, Camaro, Automatic Trans... then it is an LG4...
Chevrolet offered only two engine options,
1) LG4 (4BBL) /A4
2) LB9 (TPI) /M5
All others would have been an aftermarket conversion cars, which are not bad, just no 3 in the VIN. Seeing that it has the 20th anniversary badge then chances are it would be one of the two above.

DJP, don't feel too bad! I have emails from GM (circa 2002) which reveal that most employees there at the time were completely unfamiliar that a 20th anniversary edition was even made! (Evidently, GM was fielding more inquiries at the time about Pontiac's WS6 option)
