Nice buy Mikes86...Good luck with her....I would leave her just the way she is. Great example of 80's car decoration.

Re: Picked up my first Firebird!

Ok guys I'm really confused here about the color of my car and the paint code. When I went to get the paint code from the RPO code sticker on the inside of my center console my paint code is WA U8743 but that color comes up as "Black Sapphire Metallic Clearcoat" when the color of my car is Dark blue metallic. The vin on the RPO sticker matches the vin on the plate by the windshield so I know the RPO sticker is correct. Even the body guy says my car came from the factory Dark blue metallic. It's blue under the carpet and behind the door panels. What's going on here? Could they have put the wrong color on the car at the factory?

ghettocruiser you have the same paint color on your car what does your paint code say?

Mike...thats my same color code.

It is in fact called "Black Sapphire Metallic" as far as I know. It will be referred to as "dark blue metallic" also. Its a really really really dark blue metaillic basically.

Again...as far as I know..

Re: Picked up my first Firebird!

Ok thanks for clearing that up for me. I wanted to order paint so that I can spray the engine bay and the color sample they showed me for that paint code looked black so that got me all confused.

Re: Picked up my first Firebird!

Thats just what I understand. You used to be able to go on sherwin williams website and use your paint code and get the mix formula and all.

Not sure, but the line is getting blurry probably due to the age or our cars. The older they get, the worse records and things of that nature are getting.

Im contemplating painting mine navy blue metallic. Its close enough so I might not have to re-jamb the car. And even if I do, it wont be hard as going to black or something completely different.

Re: Picked up my first Firebird!

A good paint store... should have books that go back that far... I know the place I frequent for my supplies actually have books that go back into the 60's on hand. I have never heard of a WA number changing, but I could see it happening. However if you get a 1986 GM paint chip book from Sherwin Williams (my paint of choice) Dupont, PPG, Matrix or whomever you want, see if you could take the book outside to see it in the sunlight, as florescent lights can really mess with colors on chips.

Re: Picked up my first Firebird!

Yeah that's what that color was called. My first 1987 Trans Am came in that color. It has the black GTA style wheels though. Man I miss that car.

You know you guys are silly right?(no disrespect intended) Removing pinstripes in the sun. Spend $20 and get a heat gun. It's a hair dryer on steroids, I used to use em on boats to remove pinstripes and decals without hurting the gelcoat. And believe it or not Gelcoat is pretty fragile.
And btw Mike, thats a beautiful T/A you've found. Welcome to the fam.
